I was trying to catch a cray in a tight little cave when I turned around and saw this guy a few inches from my forehead. Still managed a few fish and crays. :D

Awww... That thing's body posture makes him look like he's scared of his mind. Probably thinking: "man, of all the times to forget my dentures!"

I would estimate that to be a big moray, based on the relative size of those nearby scallops (?). I've had a few close encounters with CA morays while poking around for lobster or rockfish. One followed my face closely as I backed out of a small cave once...

Hope to dive out that way one day.... I hear its simply incredible. Thanks for sharing and be careful!

Yeah, I think that's the same face I made when I turned around :). It's a yellow moray, about 4 - 4.5 feet long.

I thought it was a self portrait at first. and thought to myself "Damn, NZ diving sure makes a man age fast".

Hideous and strong fighter, but paradoxically easy to tame...
As a little boy I was told by my grand father (pro fisherman in the Med Sea) how the clever octopus (the morray worse predator) use every day to bring fresh baits in front of the cave until the morray becomes to confident and stays too long out of it's den... couic!

Mother In Law
a technic wich could be applied to a malicious mother in law?

A piece of morray added in a fish soup makes it great to eat.

We can't all be as purty as you, bro ;)

Get in touch soon - we gotta plan for Christmas diving.

Yeah, you gotta be careful around those things. It's hard to tell what mood they're in.

Not really. I'd say that 99.9% of the time their mood is "bad" to "downright ornery".

Ran into one Friday night that was closer to downright ornery. Peeked under a ledge looking for bugs and ran headlong into a smaller one, maybe 2-3' in size. It recolied for about 2 seconds and then started coming for me. Never swam backwards vertically as fast in my life.

You've got a good point. He was only a fraction of the size, but this guy made his intentions pretty clear last fall:

Ha ha.

I was out a few nights ago.

There was this little hole that was shared by a moray and a big bug.

The bug was squashed to one side, the moray the other.

I was going to go away but the bug looked so uncomfortable, I decided to help him. Reached in, grabbed him, and the moray never flinched.

Turned out to be a pretty good bug too. Part of this group.
