View Full Version : Can you kill a Coyote with a .177 pellet with a well placed shot to the head??? YES

Well I was told many a time it couldn't be done but I knew it could and I did. Shot was from 25yards with my GAMO Whisper Air Rifle with Centerpoint scope. I was shooting a Predator Polymag pellet .177 (best pellet in the world in my opinion). I shot him right between the eyes as you can see in the photos (sorry they are camera photos so not so crisp). I must say that I do not by any means recommend hunting Coyotes with a .177 air rifle as most shots will not be perfect and just hurt and leave them to die slow. In my case I had no other choice because of the area where this Coyote resided is very urban in close proximity to neighbors. This also was not a hunt, it had nothing to do with sportsmanship. All it had to do with was exterminating a problem. I have been after this Coyote for about 3 months and the only reason I killed him was because he killed a loyal family dog and I wasn't going to let that one slide. When he killed Puffy (our dog) my sister and neighbors said it sounded like a a person being killed from him screaming in pain so I was upset to say the least escpecially since Puffy's death was very long and painful. Puffy was killed at 9AM full on day while I was at work while he was playing in our fenced back yard. I also didn't want it to happen again to our other dog. The only reason I am saying this is because I want to make it a point not to encourage hunting coyote's with air rifles and to show my reason for doing it. I also felt in my situation an Air Rifle was better than a bow. Oh and before some coyote lovers come and harrass me and say I should've called the humain society, I did, they told me to shout and throw rocks at it if it came around, lame.

Well today I was able to put the coyote to rest and I shot him right between the eyes and he dropped like a ton of bricks without a twitch. He was a nice big healthy male. I'm sure he was living good eating backyard pets.

Nice Shot! My dad told me of a story when he and his friends were way out in the hills lost and came across a sheep hurder with a haunch on a spit over the fire he envited them to have dinner with him. They all loved it one of them said "this is the best lamb I have ever eaten" The old sheep hurder said Lamb? Its not lamb and pointed to the yote pelt on the fence.

Alotta people can barely hold down chow during the skinning process due to the fact they smell so damn bad, I generally shoot a shit load of em every year. But, god, I hate skinning them.

I think I would be willing to give coyote meat a chance. I have rescipe's for 'yote, raccoon, 'possum, beaver and muskrat that I want to try. (only ever eaten beaver, and not the kind that builds dams).

Save me some!

I was thinking about that but I didn't want to have to retrieve my shaft out of him. Also shooting a speargun on land is differnt than in the water, I knew I could hit him in the head with a pellet, not so sure about with a speargun.

those no shooting rules are so stupid... glad to hear you were able to put him down with the pea shooter.. i never had such luck when they started stalking my 62 y/o stepdad on his health walks... and by the time i could get out there, they were too far for my recurve. did you call him in?
fwiw dfg states that coyotes may be taken, any time of year, with no hunting license required, when they threaten humans, crops, livestock or pets. they may be called in, but poison may not be used, nor guns within city limits or other "no shooting" zones. perfectly lawful take, no eating required!

Thanks, Steve.... you're a little confused ,though. Alissa is a kept woman. See every morning, she get's up and offers gratitude for being THE ONE ( actually, she's the second; but that's schematics) ; THE ONE chosen to sit at my feet and cater to my every whim. Yes, that's right. She knows how very lucky she is to be allowed to bask in my awesomeness without feeling the fear that awesomeness of my caliber usually inspires. Fact, when asked what it's like to be allowed to share my bed chamber; she simply says "Awesome...".

Basil - Maybe you and the others didn't understand my dry humor joke. I live in coyote country here in Simi valley and believe cototes have it coming if they venture into the neighborhoods. If I could I would do the same.

This last year I lost a cat to a coyote so the pic put a smile on me.

Hey, I am from CA too, but am nothing like, Q.

Believe it or not... not all of us CA residents are hippie liberal douchbags.
We sane people are greatly outnumbered in this state.

Anyways, very nice job. I am gonna show this to my coworkers on Friday. Some of them are straight up coyote addicts. My good bud at work killed a 54 lb yote a few weeks back. I am waiting to see the pics. It could have been a state record, but he does not care much.

Hey Bro, what is the feet per second rate of your Gamo? I'm considering a Gamo with the 1,650 f.p.s. rate. Can a spring piston gun really kill a wild boar, as advertised?

The 1650fps is past the speed of sound. This is not a good thing. Since pellets are light they start to tumble when they break the sound barrier and lose accuracy. It also make a vey large cracking sound. What most do with the Gamo your talking about is use very heavy pellets to try to get them traveling slower than sound. You want your pellet traveling around 1000fps or slower. That's also why the gamo raptor pellets are trash, no accuracy at all.

Also about that pig. Yes they did do it but it is BS that it is a hunting rifle good for game that size. It's like hunting 600lb tuna with a 6mm shaft on a single band 100cm euro gun and a reel. Yeah you might be lucky and stone one in a thousand trys but 90% of the time you will just wound it and it will get away.

I have the Gamo Whisper. The gun is a good start but there are 2 things you need to do to any Gamo you buy before it works right. First you need the take the scope that comes with it and throw it in the trash because it will break right away and won't hold a zero. Then you need to buy a new airgun rated scope. The second thing you need to do is buy the Charlie da Tuna GRT-III trigger. You NEED that trigger other wise the gun will never be right. Stock trigger has like 6lbs of pull force the GRT-III is like 1lb.

I also purchased the venturi air ram from pyramyd air with makes it shoot even smoother.

Well obviously the air gun did the trick, but I'm curious as to why you chose the air gun over a bow? I'm just wondering because I recently started shooting a bow regularly again and wondered about it's effectiveness for such situations.
Thanks,
Ron.

I'm sure a bow would be good but first off I would need to buy a bow which I didn't have. Second I don't have any bow skills and would have to go out of my way to learn it. Also I am a little hesitant to shoot such a powerful weapon in the area I needed to.

Oh sorry. I thought because you mentioned bow vs. airgun that you were an archer. I've found a bow to be pretty effective if used correctly, but man it would turn ugly with the neighbors to have a yote come running from your yard with an arrow through it. A couple years ago a deer wandered into my neighborhood with an arrow in it. It was bow season, and could easily have been shot legally, but boy folks got upset. 20 years ago it wouldn't have raised an eyebrow, but not anymore...

Kingspear, what scope do you suggest? I was thinking of replacing the BSA Scope on my Gamo 440 Hunter with an extra Bushnell 3-9x40 that I have in the safe. I just dont know if it would stand up to the spring or not.

Thanks for the suggestion of the trigger. I went ahead and ordered one, but that spring is too expensive at the moment. I will wait until i need to replace the metal spring in the gun first...

Kingspear
11-27-2008, 11:25 PM
The trigger and scope are the biggest thing the air ram is really not needed. On the bushnel I'm not to sure but I would call the manufacture and ask. Springers eat scopes unlike any other gun because of the unique reverse recoil so make sure that it is airgun rated. Leapers and centerpoint are nice scopes in my opinion.

Niiiice shot placement-! Absolutely fricken excellent..........

Noticed you're in San Diego..... My sister lives in Rancho Santa Fe. They
lost their pet Dog "Angel" a 5-6 year old poodle to a coyote one nite. those
bastards will tease pets so they'll come out thinking the dog will chase off
the "other" animal........ well, one nite it accidently happened. My sister's
dog ran out, and that was the last time.... Her husband found the dogs body,
minus the stuff the coyote ate.......

she was devastated, I was pissed...... I told her let me come down to visit
and I'll bring a coupe rifles and I'll kill all of them...... she declined, insisting
the neighbors would freak.... Which I wouldn't frcken cared anyway....

I hate coyotes.....

I love the .17 caliber myself.... great, fast, flat shooting out to about 150
yards..... definite tack driver.... kinda quiet, considering.....
