i'm flying into Hawaii in May/June to look for a house, does any one have any knowledge about Pahoa/Kurtistown area? I'm Stationed in Okinawa right now. I'm looking for a place to settle down and relax before the big Retirement from Uncle Sam, I like the island living and Hawaii is more laid back then Oahu. I will be there for about 2 weeks vacationing and house hunting, if anyone could help out that would be great!

Hey Freedivingfool! Rick did the same thing, and when we started looking to buy over 3 years ago, we checked out Pahoa, Keaau, Kurtistown and Mountain View areas first, but it wasn't for us. Definitely take the time and look around, you can find great homes all over the island for really great prices.

It helps to get a good realtor that knows the areas as well.

Good Luck!

Welcome to Hawaii!

As a sidenote, there was an article in the local paper about how it is predicted that the Hawaii real estate market is forecast to slide 30% by 2011. Buyer beware... One of the worst states to be buying right now apparently.

On the other hand, the Big Island is much cheaper than Oahu so you're moving to the right Island. Also lots more fish...

Hey Angela, thanks so what is wrong with the areas I mentioned? I report to Dive school in panama city, so while i'm going through all my schools my wife will be there continuing college, so it will pretty much be her house while i'm gone. So I want a SAFE place for her, low crime, good schools, and close to any dive spots! Hey Blesum, hey that means the price will continue to drop, the houses I've been looking at have been on the market for awhile, so I know they are looking to sell ASAP.

Hey Paul,

I wouldn't put too much weight on what the paper has to say. I mean, if their editors could predict the market, why aren't they in real estate making money? ;)

Awesome to see another diver headed to the Big Island. From my limited knowledge of living here only about a year and a half Pahoa and Kurtistown definitely offer the laid-back, cruise island living you are looking for. On a personal note you are really close to the new surface flows out near Kalapana so that puts you into a 2 Hazard zone either on the North or South side of the East rift. You wouldn't be too far from Hilo (Where the university is I attend) either if you needed to come to larger shops.

Hopefully some more deep-seated locals will chime in some more

hey, thanks for everyone's input, I've been looking at all the lava zones. Anything above 3 would be good, sucks to get a house and have it wiped out by lava, but that's the hazrd of living in the big island. I will have to difinitely go there and take a good look at the areas, and hope to dive with some of you guys too!
