I saw a thread with pictures of flags mounted on what looked like a bicycle flag pole; might work... The flag has gotta be up higher then a float ball for sure.Any thoughts?

If you have a rod holder on you kayak you can mount a dive flag on PVC pole and just place the pole in the rod holder.

this also works in a scupper hole but I don't do that cos I have heard the plastic is the thinnest there and the seam between the two halves is a weak point, I don't put anything hard in my scupper holes...many people do though.
i use an old fishing pole that broke and I just stick that into a pvc pipe I ziptied to the back of my fishing bin as an extra rod holder
..so basically, /\ what he said .hahaha

I actually have two...One is a basic milkcrate that was borrowed from behind a grocery store. I took two actually, one was destroyed on the side and I only needed the bottom, I took a recipsaw and cut the bottom section off of the broken bin and used zip ties to make a loose hinge. I made a nice bungee rig and viola. perfect box.
the other is a store bought plastic bin from target that I use because it is longer and thinner and therefore fits into the tankwell on my tandem (the tankwell is really tank shaped and therefore does not accept the wide milk crate.
both have a pvc rod holder that is zip tied on.
I'll take a few pics once I get home today and post for you to look at

If you don't have any flushmount rod holders, these are pretty cheap, and effective. Easy to install too.

I use a long jigstick for a dive flagpole, but also hope to use it on the paddle out on boiling fish.
You can also you PVC, I am not sure of the schedule, but it is the grey PVC, that are dual threaded, and about ~2-3ft long, it is a lot stronger than the white PVC (schedule #?), and can break down easily to store in your hatch. Connect about 3-4 them together with threaded PVC connectors.
for a fish box i use an igloo water cooler with a string leash on the lid and a bunge to hold the lid on if the boat gets tossed in the surf

I decided to make my own dive flag mount. It was easier, cheaper and much smaller than the ones available on the market. Here is what I did.
Pic #1
I bought 5 nylon washers with ½” holes, 5 rubber grommets (I small 4 large), 2 rubber end-caps, 3 SS bolts and nuts, and 1 length of 1’ SS tube in ½ “.
Pic #2
In this pic, it shows how it will look once it is pieced together properly. The kayak will separate the where the gap is.
Pic #3
This is the bottom end of the SS tube. It has the small rubber grommet pushed inside. It will stop the flag pole from going all the way through, but will not allow water to be trapped inside.
Pic #4
This is where I put one of the gray rubber end-caps to keep any water from getting into the inside of the kayak. It goes over the end in Picture #3.
Pic #5
The other gray rubber cap will go over the top end to keep water from going into the tube when the flag pole is not inserted.

This is what it looked like once installed. I painted the nylon washers yellow to make it easier on the eyes.
Pic #1
This is what it looked like once installed, with the gray rubber end-cap to keep water out when the flag pole was not inserted. Has the SS nuts and bolts installed.
Pic #2
This is with the gray rubber cap off.
Pic #3
this picture shows how small the mount is on the back of my Scupper Pro.
Pic #4
This pic shows how the mount looks from the inside of the kayak.
Pic #5
This pic shows the bottom of the SS tube with the gray cap on it. when you are done using the kayak, pull this cap off to drain any water that might have gotten into it.

This is how the end result ends up looking. I hope this idea can work for someone else. Not including the flag pole and flag, everything cost me about $9.00 at our local hardware store.

I leave this installed on my Kayak, no weight or hassle. I leave the pole and flag rolled up in a little piece of pvc made into a pole storage tube with an endcap on each end at home when I am fishing and throw it in the hull during a dive trip. http://topkayaker.net/TopKayakerShop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7_29&products_id=46&zenid=617eab31f78f1c821b3c4d0f66adec9f
but there are alot of different options

The only problem I see with that setup is that it can get in the way when you are trying to get in or out of the kayak with fins on. Or in case your kayak flips, you might roll to the flag side and break it off. I prefer the flag to be in back of me, out of the way. I have enough to deal with while freediving in a kayak than to worry about how I am going to have to work around a flag pole. But yours is cheap, and easy to install. probably great for someone who is not getting in and out of their kayak a lot. :thumps:

Well, mine is in the very back scupper where my gear goes. With the SOT there are scuppers in the front and back, so its your choice. I am pretty athletic so I can work around things like that. I have never had a problem. If you wanted, you could take it out and slide it in the gear compartment before you even got back in the kayak. Just not crazy on putting a hole in the kayak if I don't have to. Your setup does look very professional though. My flag pole is sticking up where I don't even touch with my body. I can't roll my kayak, I will fall out before it tips. I have a OK Prowler 15'. Its a beast.
