I am getting ready for a trip to Kauai, leaving this Friday the 20th. This will be the first spearfishing Ive done in vis better than 15-20ft. Im totally stoked.:thumps: I'll be freediving and I only shoot what I can eat. Not looking for anyone's secret spots, just need some advice on good areas to enter from shore where the surf is not usually bad and where there are plenty of good eating fish. I would really like to get an ulua or an umilo. What depth are they typically in? Are they sometimes in shallow reef areas near shore?

Pm me if you want to keep any spots private and I would respect any wishes to keep them that way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I cant help on the Kauai spots, but HSD forums can. As far as Uluas and Omilus yes you can find them very close to shore, in shallow water and deep water. You can always check Ulua house or ledges or overhangs, if you get lucky you can catch them free swimming, but your better chance for either are caves. Omilus are very curious and can be called in by grunting.

another good thing to do if your bottom time is good is to sit on the bottom and throw a handfull of sand up. and wait for it to settle the fish will usually rush in to check it out. glad to hear you are only taking what you can eat. enjoy its a beautiful place

You are in for a treat lots of great diving. Ive only done about ten dives in hawaii but found that the sand trick works well, especially with smaller fish.

Hey thanks everyone for the info so far. I will try those tricks to arouse the curiosity of the fish. Keep the advice coming please, especially any locations I might try.
