I scanned my new genuine mint condition copy of Sept 1955 Sports Illustrated with the Pinder brothers, the only spearfishermen ever to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I scanned the whole artical (10 pages) and I'm trying to figure out an easy way to share it........that would be a heap to email. We'll worry about that if anybody wants a copy.

Great Article. Remember what these guys worked with the next time there is a discussion of a 48" vs. 52" gun. Does anybody know exactly what it was they were using? It seeme to be some type of Hawaiian sling? :D :D

Reading the article I felt I was reading about something prehistoric (going after 300 lbs tigers and 800 lb jewfish with a little sling!). It is like hunting the wooly mamoth. It is a bit comical seeing these guys with their masks and their funny little slings but man, did they go after some big fish. I wonder how people will look at us 50 years from now. Great job posting it, Screenname.

My favorite type of freeshaft. A Hawaiian sling with 1/4" or 7/32 shaft with single flip barb. It takes a bit to get used to them but there isn't a finer meal getter for patch reefs and small to medium fish (up to about 20 pounds) over a hard bottom. I much prefer them to pole spears for most things, and the shaft makes a great deep hole bug tickle stick. I still dive with one when bugging for the occasional hog and grouper and when hunting in the Bahamas.
BTW practice with a Wrist Rocket on land can help your accuracy with these things in the water.

A lesser known fact about the Pinder Brothers is that after they did the scotch ads, they were motivated to move to England and make silver plated steins featuring ornate nude women.
Like Screen Name's new mag, these collectables can sometimes be found on eBay:

You just have to be on the east side of the Gulf Stream using a J-tube. That tool is a well respected traditional method of snatching bugs out of holes over on the flats. It's not very effective in lithified marl since the bug will be in mini-sinkholes in that stuff but it works well in ledge and reef envionments. In a 30' longer form it's used to catch conch from the boat.
I just wish we could do something to stop the Bahamians from using bleach to catch bugs. It does really nasty things to reef polyps, and everything else, while giving the bug meat a distinctive taste. There is a "get out of jail free" clause in the fishing regs over there that effectively exempts Bahamians from almost all their wildlife harvest rules. Let anyone else but a rule and it gets QUITE EXPEN$IVE to stay out of jail there.
