Here are a couple of videos to show just how difficult to approach NZ fish can be:

The goatfish (which get shot) and tarakihi (black stripe behind the eye) are good eating species. There were also kingfish, squid, barracoutta and other species swimming past but unfortunately I didn't get any videos of them. I'd shot an 18kg king shortly beforehand.

Glad you posted those here - the boulder bank is a cool spot :thumps:
By the way folks, don't be fooled (by the bottom times) into thinking this is a shallow spot. Mullins, what's the sand at - 100 feet?

Yeah, that's what I thought. I haven't been that deep on the BB yet, but would love to try it out with a good crew.

Thanks for sharing. Those Goatfish sure look cool. I would love to have a print(Gyotaku) of one of those.

I'm not sure, but I think that first fish was either a red cod or bastard red cod (yes, there is a bastard red cod :)).

Yep, I think it was a bastard Kolt, but I guess you'd need to look closely at the tail to be sure. There was actually a school of about a dozen of them when I first dived on that spot. They aren't normally skittish but that one obviously didn't like having a camera shoved in his face :)
