For those of you who would like to understand more about MPAs (both state and federal), there is some great information available.
Check out this site for some helpful fact sheets:

And be sure to spend some time reviewing some of the science that goes into MPA decision-making. This online library is an incredibly valuable source of information on MPAs.
It can be helpful in formulating your comments to submit in the current MPA process.

For example, try conducting a search for "spearfishing" or even just "spear" and see what kind of scientific research documents come up.
This is the kind of research that we, as knowledgeable divers, should be participating in or conducting. We have the numbers of divers. Maybe we need to think about coordinating our efforts, training divers in scientific data collection and reporting of observations, and start putting our knowledge and experience to use in ways that may truly benefit us. Just something to think about.
