The State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) is funding Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) to perform a project to re-assess the areas designated for water quality protection as shellfish harvesting areas and aquaculture. The current definition is broad, encompassing recreational harvesting for consumption, harvesting for bait and commercial aquaculture. The breadth of the definition reduces flexibility to apply the most appropriate water quality standards to each of these applications.

The SWRCB is seeking public input as it begins this project and will hold a public meeting on May 26, 2009 in Costa Mesa to describe the shellfish beneficial use project background and goals. The goal of the meeting is to inform the public about the project and to begin providing opportunities for public involvement.

If you would like to receive additional information regarding the May 26th meeting, or to be kept informed of decisions regarding the project, please reply to mgjerde@waterboards.ca.gov by April 1, 2009 and subscribe to the email list described below.

FYI, this could possibly reduce water quality regulations and the take of consumptive invertebrates.
