Just looked up the website for this item. What does this Shark Shield go for??

I saw an ad for that thing a while back, and was curious. If memory serves, it's not cheap. There's all kinds of disclaimer language in the ad, too. "We can't guarentee you won't get attacked by a shark...."

Nonetheless, if it gives you or your spouse a feeling of greater safety, I can see where it would make you a better spearfisherman, as your focus would improve. You can not be a fully effective harvester if sharks are dancing around in the back of your mind, a good point made by Kevin (as he was passing around photos of great whites :D).

One of the questions I had about the shark shield was whether there was any chance it would repel any other marine life. This is stated in the FAQ:

13. Does the Shark Shield™ repel any other creatures?

One of the distinct advantages of this unique electronic wave-form is that it only repels predator sharks. It does not repel any other form of marine life.

i saw that thing on shark week last year and the crazy SOB that was testing it had a 15'-18' great white coming right at him. when the shark got about 10' from him it quickly turned away. it appeared to work but who knows.

Roger that Rich! One of the keys of successful spearfishing is streamlining. I know many people who have been bent, people who shot themselves with powerheads, people who have been stranded on a broken down vessel 50 miles offshore (me), people whose boat has sunk, people who have gotten hooks deeply imbedded in their flesh, and people that have been bitten/finned by a variety of snapper, grouper, razorfish barracuda etc, but nobody I know has ever been bitten by a shark. If someone is so concerned that the man in the gray suit is going to treat them like a Shoney's all you can eat breakfast buffet that they are willing to spend thousands of dollars for a cumbersome product which self admittedly states may not work, then maybe spearfishing is not their best choice in recreational pursuits.

It's not thousands of dollars for something that probably doesn't work, it's only $400 for somthing that probably doesn't work :)

the best way to keep a shark from taking a piece out of you is to do two things. find a dive buddie that swims alot slower than you and have him hold all of your dead fish. when the sharks are really heavy in the area i've found that tie wrapping bonita filets to your buddie will ensure that the sharks pay no attention to you.

The jury is still out on the use of the shark sheild, but from the feedback we have been getting it doesn't look like too bad of a thing. We have obatined two of the units and will be testing them on our first chance out. The big concern has been about how obtrusive it is going to be during hunting, etc. I have no doubt that it works, as I've seen film of other devices in working order during testing. The concept works.
We'll report more as we have it.
The company that manufactures it does include lots of "legal disclaimer" language in the product lit, but that'sa to be expected, don't you think?

Well, this past wed and thursday, went out and hit the grouper nicely.
J.B. wore the shark shield and his comments were:

It was a bit of a pain setting up the first time, but you don't even know you are wearing it. He gives it a thumbs up. As far as effectiveness on sharks, well we've yet to find out. I'll keep this thread informed as we use it more and more.

Actually no. But Captian JB has a partner in another business (wholesale bait), that fishes alot. He does the Kingfish tourneys.
We do mostly spearfishing.
Matter of a fact, went out the lasty 2 days and hit the grouper real hard. Came home smiling.
