I recently got orders for Whidbey Island, WA, and am curious about the spearing up there. I'm coming from FL, but I am not disillussioned as to what I may find up there. I recall a time when I was there 12 years ago and heard of people taking ling in Deception Pass with the right tides. Are there other locations to hunt? I love spearfishing and will miss doing it with my brothers down here, but looking forward to meeting new people and trying new game. Also looking to do waterfowl hunting and big game if I have the opportunity. Thanks for the help in advance. Oh, I should be up there later this summer.

Sorry to inform you that the spearfishing in Puget sound, however plentiful, has been reduced to near nothingness by the local government. Ling cod season is only 15 days long in June I believe. There is no bottom fish spearing of any kind of rock fish. We are left to surf perch, and flounder and greenling. If you want to do any kind of spearing to speak of.. you must go out into Neah Bay in area 4-1. Other than that,.. buy a Canadian liscence and go fish Vancouver island..... Much looser regs there...
Don't forget the 7mm Elios...

Ling season started last weekend I believe, and goes for about 4 or 5 weeks. It really is to bad that you can't go after rock fish-yum! Looking forward to going out this saturday.

3 week lingcod season for divers in the Puget Sound - that's it for the entire year!

Your right Pablo, May 21 to June 15.
why did they close rockfish down? Or is it a moratorium?

thats great about the ling season....I should be leaving for Whidbey around the 15th, glad I missed it all. it's like the red snapper season down here, clouds of fish and they say the are near extinction and only get a couple months to go after them.

I moved to Alabama from Washington st. Like you I love spear fishing and believe you will be flying back to Florida to hunt fish. Least you know where to hunt them now.;)
I have friends that fly from Washington to spear fish with me. Washington has some good eating fish just to complicated and the dept. of fisheries treats spear fishing as on of their hot spots.:(

It is utterly ridiculous here. On any given day there will be a dozen boats with 3-5 fishermen per boat sitting on every reef, every day of the season for Ling Cod and rock fish. By all reports,.. the success rate is about 45%. Yet, a single diver shows up with a spear gun and you are treated like your gonna wipe out the species.

Wow, this is kind of depressing. I will be up there the end of the month and need to figure something out regarding what to shoot. Thanks for all the insight thus far, hopefully I'll run into some of you guys in the future.

All my family is from the NW. I go there often. Most likely will be moving back in less then two years. I too would like to meet some of the local spear gunners in the NW and maybe make a trip to the Keys. Now thats some fun hunting!:thumps:

Some of the best duck and goose hunting I have ever had is there. Also, taken bull elk with a bow and several bear, mule deer etc.... You will at least have that. Then fly to florida and spear fish with your brothers.
By the way, I see your in the military. Thanks for your service . It's because of people like you my family has what they have.

You're welcome, and thanks for the recognition. It's been 8 years and I've loved it all, gonna do it as long as they keep giving me orders. Good info on the waterfowl and game, I'm looking forward to getting back into that when I'm there.

When does Dungi season open in the PS?
I took a nice limit out of Mukilteo back a few years ago.
But the regs for crab may have changed again.
Pretty fun diving and even though I did not have my gun, I saw tons of flounder.

I assume you all are going to be stationed on NAS Whidbey? If so, where are you at? I am at VAQ-132. Been trying to post for several months now and finally got access yesterday. THANKS SPEARMAX!
I dive like crazy up here and hunt whenever I get a chance. Heading out to Neah Bay tomorrow afternoon for the Labor Day weekend. Gonna do some Ling, Cabezon, and Rock Fish hunting.
IMO, Cabezon is the best tasting of them all, some extra bones, but tastes just like Grouper.
Anyway, if you want to hunt, drop me a line. I am always willing to splash and even have a boat. :-)

It has been open for a while now. It closes just after Labor Day. I've had a good haul this year at Polnell Point.

I haven't checked this thread in a while, yes I'm at NAS Whidbey, in AVEWS now, then off to 129 before I head to NC. How much diving/spearing do you do around the island, I'd like to meet up and check some stuff out. You diving wet or dry?

Im right across the hangar from you. If you get a chance, come over to VAQ-132 into Maintenance Control. I'm the MMCO. I will go out on a limb here and assume you are a Marine?
I dive at least twice a week, dry. I dove wet for about 3 dives here and said screw that. It's not too bad wetif you keep the dives fairly short, but I was staying down for over an hour and was just too damn cold.
Swing on by.

So I checked out the WDFW. If I am reading it correctly there is no spearing of rockfish between the months of May and Sept? Is this true or is it closed throughout the year? Thank you.

I'm pretty sure rockfish are off limits year round. In the Sound, at least.

No spearing of Rockfish in areas 5-13 ANYTIME. Areas 1-4 are open and productive.

Chad, I'll do that. My wife is about to have a baby so it might be a bit before I get down there, but I'll look you up. Do you do much spearing?

Just about any chance I get. I am headed out this weekend to gather Scallops at Deception Island (not spearing, but fun). I will be heading up to Anacortes hopefully next weekend to find the wreck called the "Cabezon". From what I hear, it is pretty much loaded with Cabbys.
