I say just go for both, I've got a gat-ku polespear and love it. Another option would be a crist polespear, made completely different but still awesome. And you can't forget the ray odor, it will be less expensive than the others but that doesn't you'll be getting any less of a polespear. As for hawiian slings they are generally real cheap/easy to DIY. But if you are going to solely go one or the other check out hawaiiansling.net

I've always used and prefer the pole spear over the Hawaiian sling, but it's entirely up to you as some people really like the Hawaiian sling. I just purchased a new Ray Odor take down pole spear as I've been out of the the game for a while and wanted to get back into it. There are a bunch of really nice spears out there but they cost considerably more ie. Gat-Ku, Many Puig etc. IMO you cant beat the Ray Odor for the price (around $50 for a 6ft 3 piece solid aluminum spear).
I bought an extra piece to make it an 8ft spear. Hope this helps.

If you fly, keep your pole (with-out the shaft) at 6 ft. I took my Crist to Long Island and, in it's pvc tube, it was within the limit. Anything more than 6 feet and it needs to be multi-piece. Our bahamian guide used nothing but a sling. My son traded his 3 piece Ray Odor for the sling. They were both stoked.

Slings work great and so do pole spears. A lot of my Bahamian friends who have been using slings for years are now switching to pole spears. Interesting.

I would recommend a pole that will hold up to fairly big, strong fish because if you hook into a big grouper over there you will need it.

Depending on how long you will be there take some spares such as extra band material and an extra tip. I would not use a paralyzer tip, personally, but a rotating rock tip that has 2 "wings" and a ring so it is easy to get the fish off the tip.

What ever you get make sure you practice alot in the pool or ocean, shooting at a foam bouy. When I first started pole spearing I thought it sucked! Then I practiced in the pool alot, and got the effective distance, how to aim, and band set up down. Now I love Pole spearing, and catch a good amount of fish. GOOD LUCK
