I was wondering if a anchor trolley system is really necessary for a dive yak. Is it okay to simply cleat the anchor line to the bow or even just attach the line with a swivel clip to a pad eye?

how much scope should I let out if I don't have a trolley system?

I use a trolley because my Scupper Pro is 15' and I cant reach the bow or the stern easily. I also hate sitting broadside to the wind, waves and current; a trolley helps this.

Why don't you anchor while your in the water?

Here is a link of a way it can be done without a trolly. This guy has done it all and has a great web site to share with fellow yak divers. Every kayak diver should have this site as a "favorite." Trollies are generally for rod and reel fisherman. The line on the side of the yak can be a death trap if boat is tumbling in surf and your leg/arm/neck gets caught in between the yak and the line. A 60 lb yak can do some serious damage to a human. http://jimspears.net/kayakdiving/pages/19.htm Good luck to you. Will in Sarasota

Ex Nihilo---I do not need or use a trolly system on my Hobie Adventure that I freedive from at least 2-3 days a week year round.
1. Use a polypropalene anchor line only, it floats.
2. I have a 3/8 poly tie down line attached to the bow that is long enough to reach back to the seat. Then I use a Home Depot rope wrap with 100f of braided POLY anchor line to 18in of Home Depot SS chain to a #3lb grapnel anchor. Before I push off into the water I tie the poly tie down line through the rope wrap to the poly anchor line. Now the rope wrap and anchor is stowed near my seat for easy/fast deployment. When the anchor line is down, the anchor wrap is in the water and makes it easy to take in or let out more line as needed for depth/wind/current.
To hoist the anchor, simply paddle forward and the anchor wrap will float up to the surface and drift back to where you can grab it out of the water. It doesn't get much simpler than this.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further:beer:
