just got back in. wind was ripping n-ne, waves were.....well.....scary....made it out there ok. ( about 65 min ) got in the water around 740am. water was cold cold cold and very dark. viz was about 10-15 feet. saw a school of what looked like pollock but small. probably 8-10 inches. stayed in the water about an houre, got sick of getting washed all around so i got out and tried the joppa flats for flounder r+r style. no luck. today was a total bust. very choppy water, and the current was really ripping. theres some awsome structure at the shoals though. the charts dont evan do it justice. wish it was a nicer day. will definatly be heading back out the next nice day.

also. if any one has or knows were to get a trailer for my boat 16 sea ray 1990. for about 300 let me know....i broke my axle today pulling in my damn drive way. it just snapped right near the wheel hub.

Look at the full half of the glass: you made it back, and the axle broke IN THE DRIVEWAY!!! You did a great job with that little boat!

A few questions regarding the trip:
1. How did you drift - boat attached to you, or there was somebody else maning the boat?
2. What was the noaa forecast for wind/waves? Many times it is off, but once you know the spot at the boat you get to know what is a "no go"
3. Did you figure the tides?

Regards,
Stefan

Depending on the condition of the rest of the trailer, just get a new axle. Might as well slap some new springs on there as well.

I'm upgrading my trailer axle, springs and hubs from a 2500# to 3500#, and upsizing to 14" wheels. It's not too big of a job but not cheap. My final cost will end up around $700.

Since your axle already snapped probably means it was under rated for the weight of the boat. Might be a good idea for you to upgrade to a beefier axle too.

Call a trailer shop or check out:

www.championtrailers.com

Lots of good info on that website.

What kind of trailer is it. I think you can find something cheap on craigs list. There will be more than few used trailers out there. Just stay away from trailer brakes and use bearing buddies. You were lucky, it broke in the drive way.

yah definatly alot better than breaking on the ramp or the highway. i found a trailer in newburyport looks like a decent trailer for the price. might as well just get a new ( to me) one sence the one that broke has rusted spots. put the boat up on stands ready for the new trailer.

1. first i ancored and tried diving around the boat with a float. but the current was way to strong so i ended up attaching directly to the boat.

2. i didnt check water condition. basically just had the urge to get the boat in the salt.

id like to hit either ri or the cotuit area early this week and put some time on the boat hopefully weather cooperates.

Greek,
If you plan on drifting alone try one of those hand-held GPS that are water proof and you can hold on your hand while on the surface - it will tell you if you should wait 2 more minutes before droping, or if you should get back on the boat and reset your drift. In some of the spots here you can do only one or two drops per drift, hence getting those drops right makes a huge difference. They are pricey though as you need to buy the maps too.
