Bugs at 20fsw there were 8 in one hole made like 20 dives got 7 of them. I should have used my gun they were all like 2 in over . The last one got to far in to the hole to get that was the female no doubt.

85' for 50lb dusky grouper in the Med
Most of the fish I catch here are in dives 60'-75' (grouper, muttons, AJ, hog, etc)
Fishhunta, I like to dive with my SUUNTO Stinger too. The surftime on freedive mode is a nice feature. I don't dive until at least 2 minutes are up on the deeper stuff (plus you have computer proof of your deepest and longest dive)

Man, we got some studs in this group......60, 65.........80 freakin feet!
I tickled a bug out at 35 feet in the Keys, almost drowned, went directly home and became certified.....about 20 years ago.
Just getting back into freediving, I'm only good for maybe 30 feet. But I did get second largest grouper, 15 pounds, in the state freedive championship last year.
So, yes, I am a puss  when it comes to freediving but I like it!:D
By the way Seastalker, how many times did you get that nice 48 pound Cubera in Panama Panama? Could you please post a couple pictures, one right after another another? I'll bet you are extra proud of that, I would be be! :D

i totally beleive him, for my "comfort zone" is 60-65 feet, but when i saw my black in 80 ft, i put that all aside and got him. if you asked me to get a quarter off the bottom in 75ft, i couldn't, but a big ass grouper in 85-90, no problem.

Ed, when you go after big fish freediving you have a small advantage over SCUBA. The same big blacks/gags, etc that get nervous as hell in the shallows or by bubbles don't always expect that a falling, dead appearing object in deep water can be a predator.
The 50lb grouper did not come up to "greet" me. In the Med, there is huge amount of spearfishing pressure (Italians, Spaniards, French are some of the top freedive spearos) and big dusky groupers like that are not stupid. I saw the fish in a dive and sunk towards it. He went underneath a ledge and I came up over the ledge. He had stuck his head out a little bit as he likely felt confident in the depth (dusky groupers usually have a permanent cavernous hole and once they go in it is pretty hard to find them, certainly not in that depth). He got a shot from my 70cm pneumatic on his noggin and after some wrestling came up all in one dive.
BTW, if you think it is "superhuman" to get fish freediving at that depth, check out a Picasso video (www.picassoamerica.com), where Alberto March (Spanish champion) is getting similar groupers at 40 meters (about 130 feet). Of course this is way out of my range but 60-75 feet is my usual zone.

I'm in! What about in Spring (April), that's when they have the Florida Freedive Championship in Bayport which is the qualifier for the Nationals. Interested in putting a team together? We need three divers, a boat captain who only drives the boat, and a spotter/witness that is exchanged with another team's boat. If we do well, you'll get some good pub in Spearfishing magazine. Let me know.
