OK guys- you got warmed up at the MA Species meet last week, and you know Rob can outfit you with all your gear needs. So get ready, the big fish are movin' in!
The Gulf of Maine Freedivers is holding a tournament at Sakonnet Point, Saturday May 30th. Briefing at 8:30am, meet runs 9am-2pm. This will be run like the MA/RI/NY Open meets- it is afish aggregate meet. 1 point per pound plus 1 point per fish, up to a 15lb max. A 15lb bass and a 50lb bass get the same points. It is a kayak or swim meet, no motorboats.
Eligible fish- Check the RI Marine Fisheries Recreational list, add 2" to the length minimums. In brief, TOG- 18", bag limit 3, BASS- 30", bag limit 2, SCUP-12.5", bag limit 10, etc.
You do not have to be a member of a club to attend this meet. For those of you who are beginning your tournament careers, this is a good meet to enter. Lots of variety in depth/ structure, etc. It's a great area. Just to get you going, a 33lber was speared there over the weekend, and a 52lber was caught on rod..... Game on! See you there!
Need info? contact Anne Doherty cell 617 688 4319 Thanks.

Forgot... Staging area will be right next to the boat ramp at Sakonnet Point. Google Sakonnet Point for directions- staging area faces North, we go out around the break wall to the islands South of the point. Maps of the area will be available at the meet.

If you are swimming, do you have to go around the breakwater, it's a lot easier to walk to the beach and go from there. And what is the fee for participating?

Fee is $20. (Proceeds from the meet support the North Atlantic Junior Championship meet on July 18th- Sachuest Point) No pre-registering needed. We all leave from the start point at 9am. From there, you can walk, run, swim or kayak. You cannot drive you kayak to the end of the road to the south. If you ditch your boat there on the way back, you have to carry all your fish back to the start by 2pm.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the meet. The visibility has been pretty good to great depending on your spot. There are a lot of fish around.
I'll be posting details about the Jr National Spearfishing Championships after this meet.
I'll be offline once I leave work shortly- so if you all need anything, my cell is 617 688 4319. I'll be there early tomorrow- should be a fun day.

Results of the meet!
Fot those of you who were not able to make it, you missed a great day of diving! The conditions were ideal at the start-flat seas, calm winds. The sea chopped up a bit at the end. Visibility and fish were the same- VARIABLE! Some divers were in school bass frequently, though not a lot of "max" bass were seen. That said, Ryan Graeden had no trouble breaking in his new, hot, handmade guns on a 35.4lb bass in skinny water. Yes, that was the big fish of the meet. Some other big fish were seen, but they swim for another day....... Tog were everywhere, but the fat ladies and big chinners were hard to find in numbers...
OK
6th - 4.4 pts-Kevin Castonguay- a Sakonnet point regular
5th - 4.8 pts- Carl Morlock- bravely swimming from shore!
4th - 15.8 pts- Andre Lopez
3rd - 16 pts- Jay Moore
2nd - 18.4 pts- Ryan Graeden (max bass + 1.4 lb scup)
1st - 38.6 pts- Anne Doherty
Largest Fish and most OOOOh AAAAh points- RYAN GRAEDEN!!! 35.4 lbs!! Way to go.
Thanks to all, it was a really nice day.
