I know some of you have an interest in hunting a Mako Shark. I have 2 scheduled trips and the first one is May 22. The largest Mako speared has been almost 500#, but that was in Mexico. So if any of you have huge brass balls and want to jump in the water with feeding Makos let me know. Price will be about $35, this will include all the chum buckets and fuel. We are heading out on Sunday to rod and reel hunt for a few Makos, I will report the findings next week.
My favorite Mako spot is about 30 miles out from Dana Point.

I have the $35.00. What equipment would you suggest I bring for the hunt??
I have a 36 Biller with a detachable head, or I could step it up a notch and break out my 42 Sea Hornet with the double band set up.
Any imput would be greatly appreciated.:D

I always thought left coast boys were crazy, but jumping in the water to try and kill the fastest set of teeth in the ocean, that takes it to a new level. Happy Hunting, and be sure to post the pics!

I'd be interested if there is more room. I'm not sure I'd shoot one, but I'd like to try and get some underwater pictures of makos.

We had a great time on Sunday. We had Blue Sharks, Threshers and Makos near the boat. We hooked up on two Makos, one Thresher and three Dolphins. Vis was crap, maybe 30 feet. You won't find me in the water near the chum slick in this vis. Some of those teeth are BIG. We found 67-69 degree break in the water about 17 miles out from Dana.
Total time on the water was about 5 hours, and the chum slick lasted about 3.5-4 hours.

PS. if anyone finds a nice Penn rod and reel combo, full roller guides, spooled with 100# mono and top shot with 200# spectra please let me know, LOL. A Mako grabed my bait while I was eating a hot dog and the rod went flyin. Oh well.

Did you guys really hook three Do'Do's?
Sure seems early for them to be showing up.
Sorry to hear about your lost rig. Sounds
like a real good trip too, Hot dogs eh?
Sounds like a great galley on that boat!

These were not DoDo's, wrong type of dolphin, I could only dream. They were the mammal type of dolphin. I have never had a problem with baiting them before, but they must have been hungy.

Galley? I don't have no stinking galley. We cook the dogs in foil and placed on the engine block for 10 minutes.

WOW! you know I have been around the sea for a very long time and this is the first time I've ever heard of actually catching
dolphin on a hook!.

Must be one hell of a fight!

Dogs on the block, I like it, We call 'em manifold meals
but we usually warm up chicken and burritos.

Still sounds like a good day!
