View Full Version : Any reason not to use blanks?

Is there any reason not to order a bunch of blank .223 cartridges to use in powerheads? Seems that this would be safer and at least two people I know would not have had bullets in their hulls or bodies...

what?????????????????????

that the damage is done by the gasses, not the projectile. This is why most of the divers I know use .223 rifle carts instead of 44's or 38's.

Are they sealed well without a bullet?

I don't see how gasses can cause all that damage without a bullet?
Has anybody tried this?

Yea, instead of having lead in their bodies they would have a bunch of gas like alot of people I know.
Sorry, I just had to say that.
Will blanks carry the same amount of gas?
Will the blast be the same?

I was wondering about this myself. .223 blanks are readily available at military surplus stores and gun shows. Would seem like the way to go if they pack near the same punch.

It sure wouldnt hurt to try, unless someone already found out it doesnt work. Unless someone says otherwise I may buy some next time and try them on the next goliath shark attack encounter I have.

By the way, you are rooting for the BUCs this weekend arent you? Most of the other Saints fans I know are.;)

blanks should work. it is not the bullet that does all the damage. think about it. the bullet cannot reach any kind of velocity underwater. just like if you shoot someone at long range in the head it enters small and exits large but if you put the gun directly to their head it blows their head off. it's the gases excaping that causes all the damage. not that i've ever shot anyone in the head but you know what i'm saying. after shooting a fish i've found the bullet on the bottom and it doesn't even look as if its been fired.

As you may recall, I believe that Brandon Lee (Bruce Lee's son) was killed when he shot himself in the head with a blank.

Still, I'd feel a little more comfortable with a bullet. Maybe I'll switch to blanks after you guys kill a few sharks with blanks.

I thought blanks were capped with a little paper disc instead of a slug. Which would not work if it got wet.

I'm gonna stick with bullets,it's nice to see a big EXIT hole in the side of their head.

Yea. The hole gives ya a place to stick your finger if that dude wants to kick a little trying to go on the stringer.

actually the blanks that I have used are crimped at the end and sealed with somesort of a wax....you would have a hard time keeping the water out I would think.....or you would have to use a hella bunch of nailpolish. There is no paper inside of the military brass thou. The cause enough backpressure to cycle the bolt on my m4 with a bfa "blank fire adapter" so I would tend to believe it would do its job...but then again, it probably doesn't have the pressure of the bullet causing such a explosion...****...why did I even reply lol

I have been giving this some thought over the last few months, even though I don't personally use a PH. One of the tools that I use in my line of work uses a blank with different, separately loaded, projectiles depending on the application. One of the "projectiles" is water. So it seems to me that if you use a blank cartridge in a PH you would essentially be sending a water "slug" into whatever you were shooting. However, it's the expanding gases that cause most of the damage. It may not penetrate all the way through, but it would sure make a mess of any tissue that it did penetrate. If you can get your hands on military blanks they are factory sealed to be water proof.

P.S. As to how the escaping gases cause damage. Think of it as a small, weak, but directed, explosion.

one of these days I'll learn to spell currectlie the first time around:D

Hell Yeah, I'm pullin for the Buccaneers! I'm ready to see an NFC South Superbowl Dynasty starting up. The two Southernmost teams...

As far as packing the punch, I don't see why they wouldn't. There is plenty of powder in those things but I don't know if the bullet penetration makes the gasses better able to enter the body. Let us know if you try thisnout. I will probably go buy some too and IF I ever get to dive again test it out on a nice sized AJ.

I don't know how they are sealed, but nail polish might be able to cover any paper, or maybe dip the tips into wax and then paint them over with polish...just a thought.
