So the family and I have decided to drag the 5th wheel up the Oregon coast for a couple weeks. We will be leaving Cali around the 14th or so and even though this won't be just a diving vacation my son Jon and I are looking forward to getting wet somewhere along the way! One question I had is whether or not to bring the kayaks? When I did a search on diving spots it sounds like a lot of spots are close to the shore, (3 graces, fingers and other various jetty dives and bays) Will the kayaks be useful?
I was also wondering if spearing is allowed in the state parks? Ecola state park looked pretty good on Google maps at least:rolleyes: I will print out the regs and study them but if I could get a heads up on at least where I can't spear that would be great.
We are kind of playing it by ear as far as where we are staying and how far up the coast we are going but I will be on spearboard in the places that have Wifi (which is almost everywhere), so if anyone is near where we are and want to get together for a dive that would be cool. Jon and I dive Norcal so we are pretty used to surge and kelp and poor vis.
thanks, Jim C

Hi Jim,
Sorry, I don't have any info for you. Do me a huge favor and post reports of what you find up there. If they close all the state parks in Mendo, I'll be taking my family farther north next summer as well.
Have a great trip!
Ron.

I do most of my spearing in the state parks and I have never even been approached by fish and game while spearing they are pretty chill in Oregon.i have never speared that far up the coast mostly I spear south of Gold Beach but i have heard there are some good spots up that way. A kayak may be useful but not necessary. good luck!!

I have been diving around the Newport area. There is a bunch of decent shore diving, but there are quite a few rock piles just a few hundred yards offshore that I want to explore that would require a kyak/canoe/boat. The other thing to consider is surf. If you had a yak with you, it would be relatively easy to push out past the surf line into calmer waters.

Let me know if you make it up to Newport, I'll show you the closest thing I've got to a "hot spot".

Thanks, we will be taking the yaks, better safe than sorry.
Devildiver, we will be staying in Florence from the 15th to the 18th and making trips up and down the coast to dive. I'll PM you to see if you are able to meet up. From Florence we will be going to Astoria for a few days.
Ron, I'll pm you with what I find. So far It looks like Oregon has some nice places to camp and compared to Cali it's inexpensive.

Thanks Jim.

If I remember correctly, (it's been a long time since I camped in Oregon), the campgrounds up there were cleaner and better maintained than our as well.
