The first Los Angeles County open house was held last night in San Pedro. As a SCRSG member and a proponent/co-lead for Lapis 2, this was also my first in this series of workshops. Although I have fished the entire SoCal bight at one time or another, LA has been my home since I was toddler. Hence, I had a lot to do with vetting the MPA concepts from Palos Verdes to Pt. Mugu.
Knowing the great interest that many spearos have in our LA dive spots, and how many of you folks have turned out en masse for past key MLPA meetings, I was eagerly anticipating being swamped for a couple of hours or so, while responding to questions about Palos Verdes, the point Dume area and points west.
Well, I wasn't -- swamped, that is.
Don't get me wrong, the turnout for the San Pedro workshop wasn't a complete bummer. About 90 folks did show up, mostly from the fishing-friendly side of town. But, that was the lightest turnout so far -- even less than Carlsbad. Needless to say, I was a but disappointed.
I did get to speak with quite a few kayakers--more of them than divers or anyone else--also a smattering of CPFV captains and crew, plus a handful of mom-and-pop commercial fishermen in the mix.
I'm hoping that tonight's meeting in the Marina del Rey Hotel will make up for last night. It will be the one best and last opportunity to provide and receive an LA County perspective on the Round 2 Draft Proposals. After tonight, the road show moves on to Oxnard.
Even folks who have shown up in the past--and many here have--it is truly important to attend these workshops and file the specialized Round 2 public comment forms with MLPA staff.
If for some reason you are not able to attend on of these meetings, then at the very least use the specialized public comment form attached here. This is a last resort. Your comments will be much more to the point if you attend a workshop and get those questions that have been nagging at you answered.
What if I can’t attend one of the public open houses?
If you are not able to attend, you may also provide your feedback by sending a message to MLPAComments@resources.ca.gov or by mail to MLPA Initiative, c/o California Natural Resources Agency, 1416 Ninth Street, Suite 1311, Sacramento, CA 95814. Your comments will be most helpful if received no later than July 19, 2009 so that they can be distributed to the SCRSG and BRTF members prior to the start of Round 3.
Instead, I'm hoping to see many more of you there tonight!
Happy hunting . . .
