The islands usually have the most consistent vis in socal and if you're after vis, I'd say that's your best bet. It's $66 round trip aboard the Catalina Express from Downtown Long Beach.

I've been on the catalina express but not with a speargun. Do a search in the California section and you'll get more info on doing this exact trip. good luck

Put the gun in a PVC pipe and wrap up the handle or take it off. Seems to work. Shuttle ticket is round trip whenever you decide to go back.
Biggest problem is getting around to the sites once there. Yaks are expensive and there is no cheap transpo around the island. The road runs high along the top of the island so best bet is to network your way into a boat ride while there etc.

you can buy a $100 Catalina Express credit (card) at Costco for $80 (has to be turned in and activated at the front of the store as you leave), giving you two round trips for $112 or $56 for each round trip....($80 credit cost plus $32 cash out of pocket)...the road going out of town s/e toward the stone quarry/pebbly beach dive area is closed off by a security guard....you would have to walk out the road and dive real early before he comes on or late, after he goes home..or, rent a gofl cart (expensive) and drive up over the top by the Wrigley Mansion and come down behind the closed area...you can also rent a skiff from Joe's on the Green Pier (also expensive).....pretty tough to dive without a boat at the present time..probably easiest to walk west past the Casino and dive along the cliff just beyond Desconso Beach Club...beware of the boat traffic..bad this time of year...

two harbors has more diving options that don't need a boat...and there are great camping locations throughout the island that have some good shore dive spots. kayaks can be rented.
use the search feature on this site...there's more info about how to do this than you'll know what to do with.
