Quote: The South Coast was really tough as far as getting in to preferred in any one of the sat science categories and in Laguna we were just not going to get a preferred size but we did. Because the object there is to protect the intertidal habitat. Mainly we did manage to get a preferred length of coastline which is about 7 miles which is a mile over the minimum, which is 3-6. We did it as efficiently as we could with a triangle shape.

Quote: Next is Laguna....We really focused on the backbone here. I don't think we've really completed the intertidal areas on the north and south. One of the goals here was to capture the maximum kelp because you couldn't capture the persistent kelp here. It was important to us that we meet spacing between here an San Diego.

Workgroup 2

Of course I like this one the best. I just wish the other two maps were created the same as this one. With a smaller square shape that stretches out all 3 miles to sea. Which would allow for more coastal fishing while encompassing the same area as the wider triangle design. Of course I'd also like to see the size of workgroup 1 and 3's maps decrease.

It doesn't work like that unfortunately. Lots of excellent reasoning and work on showing the need for some relief from all this is the best you can do.
If it were just a beating we had to put on people, it would have been over months ago. It's like an incoming tide that seems to keep the water rising and rising, and all you can do is stack the sandbags higher and higher.
These are still just proposals; but you get the jist of what we are up against.

Coming in a little late area we....

These are the last 3 maps being proposed. One of these three will be forwarded to the DFG before the end of this year. By mid 2010 that map will be put into law and enforced.

And calling it off is way past as it's already been signed into law and has the funding to pay for the initial map creation. What's needed right now is for NEW people to come to the meeting in October and support the map that proposed the best closures that takes into consideration the economic impact the closures have on fishermen. Right now all we can do is support the best closure map as a whole.
