Alright! I am getting a really good feeling for tonight. The conditions are looking ripe. I have a couple of spots I would like to hit tonight at midnight for bugs, then tomorrow morning spearing.
Who is up for the midnight opening? Laguna.

I'll be hitting south Laguna Pre Dawn and possibly stick it out and spear when the sun comes up. PM in progress.

Kay here's the story. That morning dive never happened, but Darren and I headed out Saturday night instead. We geared up and walked down to the sand by 7:30 or so.
And right before we jumped in the water this kid in his 20's comes up to us and gives us the don't even get in the water speech. He had his scuba gear with him in a cart, but was wearing day clothes. I started to wonder if he was bull shitting us when he said the vis was only 3ft. Then when he "noticed" we were freediving his voice went up a little and told us there was no way we'd get anything out there! Well we just told him it'd be fine, we're not new to this sport, but thanks anyways. He carted his gear away and we headed for the water.
Now it was a little murky in the sandy areas, not 3ft, but doable. Although not knowing the area that well didn't help us any. We searched for a while without seeing any rocky ground or kelp. So spotting a hoop net in the distance with no boat nearby we decided to check that area out. Sure enough we found some structure and I nabbed a bug after the first few dives. But by then the boat returned and was circling the small reef. Even though we weren't diving right on top of the hoopnet, we got the message and headed to a new spot closer to shore.
The new spot was waaaay surgy. I got pushed at least 15ft in spots. But timing it just right I worked with it and covered more ground. Picked up two more bugs to get my limit for the day (I got 4 bugs at the opener you see).
Darren still hadn't caught a bug so we traded lights and within a few more dives he grabbed a nice one! Helped him open his bag as he shoved in his very first California lobster. :thumps:
And that's when Darren looked at his light I was holding and realized it was flooding . The light still worked, but that sloshing water inside it was not a good sight to see. So we had to call it a night and headed for shore.
Anywho went back to the car, gave one of my lobsters to Darren and headed back home to write this report~

Well after knocking out two months of expense reports and a laundry list of honey-do's which included laundry, I finally got to dive last night. The dive itself was not great. We had the nutjob on the beach, the nuts on the boat, nutty wave and surge and a stupid light that flooded. But I got my first CA bug! I can finally write something other than 0 on my card!
Tonight's menu: Filet mignon and lobster.
Thanks to Daniel for letting me use your light and for the extra bug!

No prob. But how's your light doing? Did it survive the flooding? Cause it was doing the weirdest thing, turning off and on whenever I tilted the light. Even with the saltwater inside it that was pretty interesting to see.

I think the light is destroyed. The batteries leaked and several parts are very corroded. Oh well. I have been thinking that my light is not bright enough for some time now. This gives me an excuse to get a new one. Once I get my new fins, maybe I'll trade my Black Teams for a better dive light.

If you don't mind shopping at sport chalet they're having a sale on all primary lights right now. I picked up a miniwave LED with light mounted lobster gauge for 80 yesterday. Usually try to shop at local dive shops but the college budget couldn't pass that up.
Congratulations Darren. Good work to both of you and way cool of you Daniel to share a bug with a bud. The plac eyou dove is a good one. I think you just need to gain some familiarity with it. Nice place to whack some fish too. Nice going.

A mom and pop shop that charges way more than MSRP and has bad attitude, elitist employees?
Note to dive shops, you don't really attract customers by treating them like idiots! Same with tackle shops, it's the reason i love Hogan's in Dana Point and Mako, Always damn helpful and polite.
Not talking about you or your shop Joe~

I stopped caring about my local dive shop when an employee told me the MLPA was probably a good thing and didn't care what I had to say about how it would affect fishermen.
Well shit I come to the dive shops because I'm a fisherman and I dive in those location.

depends on what dive shop, I'm not stoked to buy gear at beach cities after they were insanely overpriced but there used to be rad shop right by my house that had good stuff and good prices, think they moved or went under though. it was liburdi's scuba i think.

I will buy from whomever can give me the best prices and the best service on the gear that I want. If I find a better price at Sports Chalet, I will ask the local dive shop to match it. If they do something for me, I'll buy from them. If they don't do anything, I will go to the cheaper store.

 First time I read that I thought "plac eyou" was some sort of code word.
But diving in the dark at a spot neither of us were familiar with was a first for me. Alex was supposed to join us and he knew the spot, but work called and he had to ditch. Still I had a lot of fun, and my boogie board float really calmed my nerves about the hoopneters. Because even when I was underwater, my strobe light was on top to alert the boats that I, or at least something, was in the water.

Ah it's just one employee, so you can't blame the whole shop. I just don't like going there because of that one person.
Effect?
Ah my bad, I'll go fix that.
Effect? Well I'm a cheap ass to begin with so it's not like they lost a ton of money :p
Do you mean Affect*?

Darren , Most light manufacturers warranty their product. I dont know which brand you have ,but for the most part, I have always recieved a replacement with no problem. Worth the effort to check into it. Congrat on your first Bug.
