Just want to get a line on who at this point is planning on fishing this tournament. There are a couple of guys in the MO, AR area who are considering this tournament, but the team requirements etc. mean we need to pool resources and trigger skills for it to make sense.

Why Greers Ferry ? Just curious...

Because that is where it is???? You would have to ask the tournament directors why they chose it.

We were there a couple of weeks ago shooting fish and had a blast.

I would be curious how they decide certain places for spear tournaments...for no other reason than curiosities sake.

I'm with you on that, I thought Greer's Ferry an odd choice too. I guessing they chose it for it's proximity to Little Rock - easy plane ride in and out, and the clear water. It's a quarry lake like most of the AR lakes so the vis is good, and you can shoot game fish - Walleye, Stripers, Large and Small Mouth, Drum, Carp, Blue and Channel Catfish, Croppie, Bluegill, Gar etc. It's definetely a kick ass choice for a fresh tournament as you will actually be able to consume most of the fish you will see.

I am pretty sure it is Salt and Freshwater Nationals. They will both be held there on same date. I dont have all the details but I am sure someone will chime in with them to clarify. (Mike ?)

Salt and Freshwater Nationals in a fresh water lake? That is weird. I sent Phil Lamm of the MDC an email asking for info, if he gets back to me I will pass it on.
Is anyone planning on diving it?

The midwest council holds the saltwater nationals every five years. This year it is in Greers Ferry. It will be a combination of salt and freshwater nationals. It will be a one day event. The next day will be scuba nationals. There is also mixed teams and a womens division. Freediving will be 3 man teams and scuba will be two man teams. I believe you need to be part of a council to compete.

Thanks LBG for clearing that up. And yes I agree, it is wierd but I look forward to competing in it.

I will be there no matter what............
I was talking to Phil L. and he said I'd just get stuck riding in the boat doing "grunt work/judge" as I haven't been a member long enough, no worries there though.
I had to sit out of spearfishing most of 2009 with all the crap going on in my life -- but that's now history and I'm looking towards an ass kicking spearhunting season for 2010.
I'm going to DEMA next month and Preformance Freedivers will be there with a booth and doing demo's. I will make them one of my first stops.
I've been to Greer's Ferry a couple of times and the lake is just fantastic. The town is big enough to find everthing EXECPT ONE ITEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!:(
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A "DRY COUNTY" ---
THAT MEANS NO PLACE TO BUY BEER/ALCOHAL.
CLOSEST PLACE IS 60 MILES AWAY (one way) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please stock up before crossing county line and save yourself some hassel.:thumps:
Other than that I can't wait for next Spring.

I will try and go again this year, the nationals are a boat load of fun man!
Do you guys know if it will be a kayak tournament?

You can use a kayak or boat or shore dive I think.

I'm here in Arkansas to dive Greers Ferry. I'm hitting it in the morning and will let you guys know how it goes. I also plan on shooting a little video, but bear with me, I'm new at editing, etc... I'm hoping I'll still find fish this late in the year.

Greers Ferry recently got over 7 inches of rain in one day. The lake is 20 feet higher than normal right now and everything around it is flooded. The visability is poor with alot of suspended particles and the water temp was 59 degrees. I had no idea where to go, but I did find some bass and perch. Shot a couple decent bass for dinner. I met a couple guys who were running trout lines for catfish and they'd caught a nice blue cat that was about 12lbs. I'm thinking that this is probably about the worst time of year and about the worst conditions for fishing the lake. I have a good feeling about next August. :thumps:

Ok, got the video done. I hope the resolution is ok. I had to take it down from 720p HD to a manageable avi file.

Thanks for the video, Travis.
What is the underwater structure (if any) of the lake like? Or is it mostly just a desert like a lot of other lakes?

Damn Travis; that fish looks like shit with all the dings and sores on it. Hopefully some of the other fish were not so beat up.

Underwater structure was hard to find because the lake is so much deeper than normal. I was diving down through trees everywhere and the viz was awful. There was alot of bushes all over the bottom almost everywhere I dove. I dove a few spots. The most interesting was the cliff area, but the bottom was so messed up that viz was almost zero. In some areas, there looked to be caves, but noone home that I could see. I think that when the lake is at normal levels, and it's warmer, there will be alot more game to be seen.
Paul, the fish I shot was nasty looking. The side was all pink and puffy from a bad heal. Probably some kind of infection from parasites attacking an injury. It looked like it had been in something's mouth. I shot a smaller one that I think was a Kentucky spotted bass and it wasn't nasty like that at all. All the catfish I saw the guys catching looked great too. I was afraid that I might get that dreaded, "This lake sucks" feeling, but I'm actually really stoked about shooting there again.

Not really weird, they';ve been doing them in freshwater for decades.
Last one was MO, tablerock lake in 2005? This will be an excellent meet, with big fish, and hopefully lots of them.
Adelito, you can use a kayak, but I wouldn;t recoment it.
The area is huge, and unless you luck onto a hot spot, you'll be stuck paddliing around while everyone else is racing from spot to spot.
Kind of like kayak comp in florida, not really applicable in 90% of the areas they would be held.
I'm there for sure,,,,,,,,,,

I think Bull Shoals would have been more fun to have the Nationals, except the rules for shooting fish there are different. No bass. I did kill 3 carp there in short order. Arkansas spearing is not to be under rated. I had a blast.

Yeah, the area looks good...A florida kayak tournament would be hard alot of our "good" spots are 3 miles offshore...Well hope to see you there champ
