OK, Cali hunters, what should I get? I have a decent pole, and an ok reef/surf gun. What will be best for big buts, and WSB? Oh, and reasonably priced, and readily available.

Enquiring minds want to know! I don't want to just do a search, I want info from Cali divers, based on experience!

I would love to hear where this thread goes! I'm so close to buying a Wong carbon hybrid I can taste the fish. I have waited for quite awhile and looked around at all the local stuff in the so-cal area but it seems that those guns really have something extra to offer. I'm usually of the school " buy the best even though it hurts the $$$ fund and you get what you pay for". I'm just hoping this is the case with a Wong speargun.
Hope fully everyone will chime in and offer up thier advice and share about what there favorite is. Yes, the thread has been around before and yes I did all the searches on the site, but its still great to get new info or hear from someone who may not have posted.
Good luck photo TJ. Hope you get some good info and a great gun.

well tj, your going to get my biased opinion...lol. i have a vast array of Riffe guns to use (they are all julie's!! haha) and my favorites are
1. halibut.... i love the little "Competiter 0", i have shot numerous halibut with this gun... just remember to use the 2 barb tip head 2.halibut, calicos, white seabass, yellows, etc... the metal tech 3, comp 3 or mid-range guns are perfect!!
3. white seabass, yellows, fish you need to shoot at that are about 20+ feet away.... the metal tech 5, comp 4 or 5 work great to reach out and touch someone...lol.

but for around SoCal... i would have to say the perfect gun would be the #3 in either the Metal Tech series or the Teak. But i would recommend different tips for different fish...or just go with the large 2 barbed head for all around use. The ice-pick is perfect for whites and yellows... but i would not use it around rocks and bottoms. The flopper is great and easy to pull the fish off but SUCKS for shooting halibut (the tip must penetrate deep into the sand to inorder engage the flopper).

so in summary, go with the no#3!!!!

any questions, PM me or call julie at the riffe factory

good luck

I do like my Riffe C-1S. It's great for the reefs, but it's not enough gun for WSB. I've decided that my next gun will either be a Rabitech Apex or Rob Allen Carbon (110-120cm). I've become real curious about these guns after reading various posts, and the price won't break my wallet.

I bought a Riffe C-2 because I was told it might be the best all-around gun for So Cal shorediving. I love it. The spear goes exactly where I point the tip. Next I figured I needed a WSB/YT gun so I started thinking about getting a Wong hybrid. Problem is that's all I did was think about it. The whiteys started showing up and I went out to the backside of Catalina and tried a dive buddies' Riffe Hawaiian. I liked it, I could cock each band with one pull. So I ran out and bought one the next week cause I figured I'd be back out hunting game fish soon and didn't want to take the time to order a Wong. Unfortunately, work and bad vis has kept me out of the water and I have not even cristened my new Hawaiian. :(
Like all the Riffe teak guns, it's obviously very well made. I don't seem to do alot of tracking left to right when lining up a shot, so I'm not sure I'd take advantage of the better manueverability and tracking of a Wong Hybrid.

i agree. riffe gun shoots where u point it. i have a riffe 2xs and i love it.

3 bands but around here i only load 2... especially with the bad vis lately.

cheapest price that I found (and bought my speargun from):

http://www.underseassports.com/spearguns.html shipping was only 8 or 9 dollars, as opposed to most of the places that charge 20-30.

Bluegill… I’m a commercial spearfisherman in Florida and have been using Wong guns for several years. I do not have a financial interest in selling spearguns, but I often rave about Wong spearguns and recommend them to others. I can assure you there is no finer speargun… anyone who says something different has never used a Wong.

Thats pretty much enough said for me! I can only hope to see some of what you have experienced in your years underwater diligaf. I have emailed Daryl and plan on calling him before ordering, but , I feel that a 55" gun with an enclosed track is a little big for the type of spearing I'm usually doing. With your experience and knowledge of Wong spearguns, is an enclosed track, really " that much better", I hate buying something and then finding out that this is the latest greatest on next years model. Mr. Wong said a 50" would be sufficient for what i'm using it for, and that was pretty much all I needed, BUT.... I just keep reading about all the enclosed tracks and how good they are, and I just don't have any knowledge to know if it it really is something I should even be worrying about. But, like I said, I hate having to do things twice, I hope my gun after this one, will be for a totally different type of spearing, NOT a correction, if that makes sense. Thank you for the feedback, any more info is welcomed , and thanks in advance!
Thank you diligaf

Bluegill… One of the best things about buying a Wong gun is Daryl personally consults with each customer to make the right guns for their needs. He’ll make the perfect gun for your needs… the guns are truly amazing!
