View Full Version : N. Laguna 6/14
Dove n laguna last night. A little stirred up on the beach, but once I got out past 10ft. it cleared right up. Lots of bait in the water, there were what looked like topsmelt on steroids all over. huge ones. did two short dives to warm up, then as I'm drifting at the surface, I see two little eyes, and then a mouth, it's a halibutt! I proceeded to dive down, didn't have to go far b/c it was only 15ft of water, and stone em right through the spine. No fight at all, grab him by the gills ane bleed him and swim in. I couldn' have been out for more than 10 min. I wanted to go look for some more becasue the vis was great but figured I got m share already. Tale of the tape: 12lbs, 28":D
Hell yeah! Nice work. I was out in South Laguna area last night, vis was horrible. We were trying to hunt down the thousands of croaking WSB, but could not get close enough. The croaking got so loud we could almost feel the vibrations.

Nice going guys. T'is the season for sure.
Kyle, I'll resist the temptation to ask you where you heard those whites, but if you could feel them, they were probably only a few feet away. The fact that they let you that close means you were doing something right for sure.
If I were in your shoes, I'd make a point of going back out again this evening. You don't know how long they'll be there. Did you try lying on the bottom and looking up? Sometimes that will give you a couple of extra feet of visibility and allow you to get a shot off.
If it works out well, you can go home with an nice white and still catch most of the Laker game:D
We were hanging out on the backside of a reef, and would dive down and swim around it. The croaking was almost scary as it was so loud. On my last dive, I shot at a nice calico and all croaking stopped instantly and did not come back for the rest of my swim. I have a 24 hour shift today so no hunting for me until Thursday.

Very nice indeed. Marcus informed me you used his gun. Let me know when you decide to head out there on a weekend. I gotta break in my gear.

Yesterday: shot a calico first 3 minutes in the water: 23". Didn't have a scale tho. Didn't hear any WSB either:). Took underwater pictures with my new camera off Ebay. Anybody want me to take pix/dive +shoot w/ ya let me know. i probably need a strobe light to make it clearer. Vis was 10-15 yesterday, but I went when it was dark: 6:00pm

Starry Flounder, I shot this one on Friday afternoon in 20 feet of water, I spent 45 minutes and didn't see 1 butt, but found this tasty morsel. I tastes ten times better than halibut, much sweeter. I got him off Del Monte Beach, right in front of my house, Gonna look for a butt after I play golf today.
Went out last night with my girlfriend, in Laguna near the casa. She was swiming all around, not being to quiet, and I was resigned to just getting a little exercise. Then she starts yelling about something, so I swam over to her. She shows me a nice hali in the sand, about 10 ft. of water, I give her the gun and she proceeds to place a nice shot right behind the gill plate. We bring him home to fillet up. Her first shot, first fish ever, and she gets a 24" halibutt. Unbelievable!
