Hi all, I've been diving several times already in the Newport area and have been looking at areas further north(Barview, Nehalem). So far, I've been getting the blacks, but now I want to get into the lings. Is this the time of year when they start coming in to shallower water as they do further south? If anyone wants to do a weekend dive, please PM me. Thanks,

Tyson

I think lings here behave much the same as their southern cousins. From what I hear Barview Jetty is a very reliable place to find lings but they're hard to see through the pea soup this time of year. In fact I was just out there last weekend trying to find some but the vis was 1-3'. I haven't tried or heard much about Nehalem. I'm new to the the Oregon hunting game as well so please pass along info if you get it!

Where on the barvue jetty did you dive was it on the ocean side or in the channel? I dove the rock islands out there before you get to the jetty saw mostly perch there but that was in the summer. Also did you free dive or scuba?

Channel side. On the north jetty (enter through the camp ground). We did scuba. The entry over the rocks there isn't fun with all the gear so may be free diving would be easier. Didn't matter really that day cuz the viz was so bad I would have smacked right into the bottom before I even realized it. May be that would have brought the lings running? :D

Ya I don't know about that spot I tried it once free diving and had similar luck, did not even shot the gun. All I saw was small stuff, 2-5 inches. I wonder if there is ever good vis in that aria. Oh and if anyone is going free diving let me know I'm available most of the time for now. For those of you in the Portland aria we should get together at some pool for training this winter. If you guys currently do let me know I would like to join I'm sitting home and getting fat by summer I wont even know how to kick the fins let alone dive.

There is good vis there but rarely. I've been out with 10' vis before. Talked to people who say it can be is as good as 20'. Mostly in late summer early fall when the ocean is calm and the temp is starting to drop and the bloom is low. I hear really late and early in the year can be productive for lings, we just need the weather!
