Do you think it would be possible to mount one on body armour? I think they are called molley straps that I have all my gear laced in to, I think a chest mounted gopro would be cool, and I could use it for work.

Hard to believe my year in Afghanistan is over . Been one hell of a quick year . Maybe should've posted this in the R & P section , but quite frankly , believe it or not ; on this issue I'm pretty apolitical for the most part . I understand that when I'm called, I go . That was part of the contract and the oath .

So that aside...

This country is absolutely gorgeous . You can't begin to imagine and I wouldn't know how to describe it . Look at my avatar for example. It's incredibly rugged, but the Hindu Kush mountains that greeted me every morning, the crystal clear mountain streams and lakes I flew over were amazing . Here around Kabul and Regional Command-East the weather was generally pleasant . Fall and spring especially. I found the weather extremes much more pronounced in Herat, Tarin Kowt , Mazir-i-Sharif and Kandahar . But thankfully, where I called home , was pretty mild for the most part .

The people - Afghans are fun to work with as long as you accept that you never trust them fully. It's easy to judge that aspect when you're family isn't in danger or hungry , and you never fully trust someone that is desperate. Many of them are very desperate. This may seem like an odd paradox, but in the same breath , they can also be very loyal . We call it "localized loyalty", as in loyal for here. For example , about 6 months ago a buddy and I were out for a walk around the "green zone " ( no such thing here ) and we passed through a check point manned by a contracted Afghan guard. He struck up a conversation about watches. He said it seemed like people were always asking him for the time , but he didn't have a watch and wanted a recommendation. Prior to this, I thought I had lost my good watch and had purchased a "cheapy" at the PX . I had found my good one , but was still wearing the cheapy. The man needed a watch so I gave him mine. Months later, I passed through that same ECP and you would've thought that I was the Dr. that had delivered his son. Took me an hour to clear that gate after tea and bread and bs'ing. About two months ago he was working a different one and as we started to go through it and into town , he stopped us and pleaded with us to leave by way of the Embassy instead . He was very adamant . He knew something .

I am bringing back with me a "Leatherman" tool that was made from a leafspring . I had heard that they'll do this and sure enough, I was hit up by one of them to borrow my issued one. I told him that I was accountable for it and he said " It's no problem. One week.". Four days later he brought mine back to me along with one he had made for me and one he had made for himself . It's a bit rougher and doesn't open as smooth but ,aside from that , it's a "Leatherman tool" . I once watched a guy machine an almost exact copy of an old, British Webley revolver in a roadside shop . It was meant to be a shooter. Respect.

They can aslo be cruel to a degree that is hard for us to imagine . It's a source of humor that is stomach churning . I have nothing further to add about that . Suffice is to say, Afghan culture and ours are so different . Never the two shall meet.

Worked with some great people . From the top down . I worked directly across from a Army full bird who pretty much gave free reign to do what ever I needed to do to get my tasks accomplished . If I needed to be somewhere , I went. No questions asked. I probably could've really abused that, but I do have somewhat of a moral compass . My fellow NCO's were all really great to work with and I'll miss my brothers.

I'm ready to go , though . It'll be 13.5 months since I left by the time I actually walk through my front door. My give a f**k meter is tapped out . So it's probably best that I handed my duties off and am off to begin my long journey home. It's going to take me about a month to actually get home with Warrior Transition in Germany and the de-mob site in the US . But , I'm ready to start the trip. In four more hours.

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target:

Dear Mrs. Johnson,

Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store.

Our complaints against your husband are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:

1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in House wares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom.

4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, “Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away.” This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. We don't have a Code 3.

5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.

6. August 14: Moved a “CAUTION - WET FLOOR” sign to a carpeted area.

7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him, he began crying and screamed, “Why can't you people just leave me alone?” EMTs were called.

9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the Mission Impossible theme.

12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his “Madonna look” using different sizes of funnels.

13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled “PICK ME! PICK ME!”

14. October 22: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed “OH, NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!”

15. Took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where the fitting room is.

And last, but not least:

16. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, and then yelled very loudly, “Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.” One of the clerks passed out.

Years ago, I had some terrible stomach pain that lasted about a year. (gastritis) I went to a GI, who prescribed acid blockers. No healing.

I was at a fishing tournament and a friend offered me a beer. I refused and told him about my predicament and inability to eat or drink anything too toxic. He said, "you need to drink aloe vera juice." I told him I had been on the strongest medicine known to man and nothing had worked, but I was desperate at this point so I bought some. 24 hours later I was completely healed and haven't had pain since.

I share this because the doctor who was treating never mentioned this as a remedy, but it worked instantly. You can buy it at most drug stores, but the concentrate from Whole Foods is the best.

Hope this helps somebody.

Best,

Will

Mother's Day is forthcoming. My mom is the strongest woman I know. I am so lucky to have a number of women in my life, as my friends, who really inspire me. Divers, athletes, moms, daughters, sisters, etc.

Ive also had some experiences in the last year of my life, that really helped me reflect upon the strength of the women I've been blessed to know through diving, and the communities associated with the ocean.

Strength is not always physical. It is emotional. Mental. Spiritual.

This is a male dominated thread, but I'd love to see what women inspire you. A man's strength is often inseparable from a strong woman. Who is strong for you, so that you can be strong for her?

I remember having so much purpose being strong for a man... Its often unnoticed by a man. When a man takes time to reflect upon that, especially around Mother's Day... or whatever other days special to a particular woman... you will be amazed what positive things will happen around you. I promise. Its not the day itself that is important. You dont need a Holiday, to see whats around you. Its the thought, the respect, the effort, the gesture, and the memory.

Lets keep this a clean, positive thread. :cowboy: I'll start.
