Hey guys,
I'm looking for some info on spearing in San Salvador. I have the opportunity to go meet my brother over there and crash in his room while he's doing a private gig Blue Marlin fishing on a sporty. I know the law says that you must be 200 yards from shore on the out islands. I've heard swimming from shore to the wall is a pretty manageable swim and that I could probably find some nice fish there. I'm aware of the shark population. I guess my main question is what is the best way to go about getting out? Just work out a deal with locals or hire a guide? If anyone has any experience with someone specific over there who could hook me up I'd really appreciate it. I'd be flying over around June 8th-10th and driving back to Palm Beach on the 14th with them.
Thanks in advance,
If anyone has any contacts out that way and would like to go diving sometime or introduce me to their contact, I would appreciate it.

Boy am I going to get burned for this one, but I didn't bring my camera on any of my three trips. The wife and I just got back from Mexico for 6 days. I booked three days with spearfishing today with two being in Playa Del Carmen and one day being in Cozumel. I just wanted to write a short review for anyone considering spearing in Mexico. First off the Spearfishing today crew (Leo, Niko, Diego ect) really made us feel welcomed. Keep in mind unless you book a private trip you may spear with some newbies that could slow you down if your more experienced. I didn't run into this problem (not that I have years of experience anyways) but it is possible. The first day in Playa I became ill with a virus running around our hotel and had to cut my trip short. This was a bummer because I had the boat all to myself. The second day I felt better and we had a few experienced spearos aboard and a couple that was snorkeling. The water was amazing, with top to bottom viz. 90ft plus in some spots. All kinds of ledges and small drop offs and of course the infamous permit shipwreck you see in a lot of their videos. Depths ranged from 30ft to 90ft for this particular trip. Black grouper, rainbow runners, mackerel, barracuda, snapper, tropical fish ect. were all seen on this trip. I will say being used to the dirty gulf up here in Florida the fish were far more spooky and harder to hunt. I can only assume it was due to the clarity of the water and probably local pressure. I still had a blast and the trip was really worth it for the site seeing alone.

Cozumel

On my last day I took a ferry to cozumel to fish with Anibal (however you spell it). The spearing here although close to Playa is very different. Water clarity ranged from 100ft plus to 15-20ft. We seen fish in all areas but the few dirty water areas were loaded with fish. We fished larger coral and rock heads all the way out to the most amazing site I have yet to see underwater. We went out to the edge of the bluewater and drifted for maybe 2 miles a ledge that seemed to drop off the face of the earth. There were grouper, lots of trigger fish, horse eye jacks, permit, snapper ect. on this ledge and trip as a whole. Cozumel is far more remote of an area to hunt (which I like) maybe 2-3 boats seen and I had a blast here. We got several fish including a 4ft or so barracuda which the locals here seem to love. Being from the states I still have not found the nerve to eat one, but I hear they are good.

All in all I would recommended to anyone either trip and as my skills progress I am really considering Leo's Holbox location for a true diehard spearo trip. Thanks to all at Spearfishing today for a wonderful time not only for myself but my wife also. I am already planning a return trip in September.

So if anyone knows someone that will take us out or can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated! IN RETURN you would have a payed trip on my boat doing some bluewater spearing for wahoo and other pelagic's! I would prefer a local in Nassau that knows the "spots" if you know what I mean.

Feel free to send me a PM.

Wanted to introduce myself. I am Robert Pickering, I have been spearfishing since I was 15 and now own a dive shop down here in Mulege, BCS. I have lived here in Mulege for the last 14 months but just opened the shop a month ago. I spearfished over 200 days in the last 14 months here so I got a great handle on the fish here now.

I have set up the business around spearfishing tours but we do offer Scuba, Snorkeling, swimming with Whale Sharks and vacation rentals for the families. If you do not know about mulege, please check out the website at www.spearfishbaja.com. Mulege is a small little pueblo that is really unique. Not like Cabo or La Paz with high prices and tons of Americans walking around. This is a great place to visit and a lot of fish because of its location. You can fly into Loreto, BCS and rent a car or if you are renting with us we provide round trip transport from the airport.

I will be providing fish reports on here almost daily. I spearfish 6 days a week so you should see them the following mornings. I see fish in the 100 lb class every other day so I should have some pics of one posted soon.

Well I moved to La Paz for work (on and off) for the next 2ish years. I hope to keep a running report of how I do every (most) weekends.

This was my first weekend where I had my sh*t together enough to go for a dive. I drove out of La Paz, generally looking for some nice looking coast and when I found it, a little past Pichilingue, I pulled over and hopped in. I had a long surface swim out to a point that looked promising and the vis steadily got better from a cloudy 15' to a very pleasant 30'+. The structure was a shallow reef surrounded by sand. I cruised the edge for a while, not seeing much. After an hour or so I found what looked like the best topography yet, a reef edge that dropped a little and turned to sand abruptly in the deepest water I could find, about 25'. I pumped up for a long aspetto in the sand, watching the sargeant majors and small reef fish go by. Towards the end, something dinner sized showed up, what the guys on the rocks told me was a "Pargito". He looked about 3 lbs and I was ready to shoot when I saw another at the edge of my vision that looked a little bigger. I decided to hold off and go up for air. A second aspetto and about 2 minutes in, I have 3 or 4 of these pargitos swimming around warily. I decide I'm out of air and want dinner so I tagged the largest and went up. I stoned him on the shot and he was probably 3 or 4 lbs. I swam around for another 30 minutes but the boat traffic had me on edge so I started to make the long surface swim for the barn. On one of my last dives, at the end of a 2:30+ aspetto, 2 larger (about 6 lbs) silvery fish came in. They were moving quickly and nervously but wanted to check me out. I will admit I didn't quite know what I was shooting but I intended to eat it. I blew a hole right in the middle of him and went for a little ride. The other one stuck around and if I had a buddy, he could have tagged one. Unfortunately, I noticed the dorsal fin on the fish go up just as I shot it and realized what it was. I had bagged myself a roosterfish. They are cool looking and I always wanted to see one up close. I did not, however, want to eat one. I have heard they are horrible and this one is no exception. I made it through half of one fillet and froze the rest while I think of what to do with this awful fish. I really regret shooting it because I like to eat what I take but I dont know if I can stomach this.

I'll throw up a couple pictures when I can, probably monday or tuesday. Stay tuned for more reports!
