From Carmel to Pt. Sur the water was shockingly blue as seen from the hwy, looked to be 30 foot vis. A stiff breeze but swell didn't seem too large. South of Pt. Sur it was noticeably worse vis all the way to SLO. Unfortunately I was just driving through but one day will return to experience the underwater beauty of the central coast!

I have to get something off my chest. I'm sure that some will be offended and think this has no place here, but then there are always some who will be offended by anything.

First of all, when someone gets a fish on my boat, I post a report. That in itself pisses some people off, but its what I do. Conditions sucked Monday and I didn't post.

Second, people have been doing pretty well so far this year on my boat, so I've posted quite a bit, but this is misleading. There are lots of guys on other boats doing even better, but not posting. But since I post, I get a fair amount of PMs and emails asking for rides. This is normal. Since I post and others don't, people think I'm probably more open that those other guys to taking out strangers, and this is probably true at least in general.

When I go out, my preference is for people who have been with me before. I don't have to tell them where to put the fenders, how to handle the anchor retrieval system, how to get the boat on the trailer, and how to clean it, etc. If I take someone who has never been on the boat before, I really prefer that I also have someone who is one of my regulars.

It also helps if they have proven to be very good at putting fish on my boat, because then I get to write more trip reports and piss off those who don't like them. :)

So with all that background, here is an example of what its like trying to please everyone. Dam and Joel are almost always off work on Fridays, and since they fit all the other criteria, they are my default crew on Friday. But Joel said early on that he has to work this Friday. Dam wasn't answering emails or texts. The guy who went with me Monday insisted on paying for all of my gas plus a few bucks ($80 total) and said he wanted to go again Friday, so he went to the top of the list. But when I called yesterday to confirm, he never answered my voicemail. When I texted him today, he replied that he was going with someone else on an overnight trip Thursday/Friday. OK.

So now I was faced with no crew at all, so I started working down the list of people who have said they would like to go with me, offering a choice of Thursday or Friday. I spent at least half of today leaving voice mails, sending emails, etc. Its not that easy to keep track of everyone who has told me that they might be available during the week, and even harder to keep track of how many days advance notice they need, but I do try.

I got lots of good reasons for not being able to go. One guy had hotel reservations with his wife out of town for the weekend, and I sure couldn't fault that. I gave him a rain check. Another guy who always says he wants to go with me had already taken his day off this week (and had limited out on halibut) so he couldn't take another one. I can't find fault with that either. Life happens. But do you get the idea? Lots of people say they want to go, but then when I invite them, they just can't go that day. Its partly my fault because I don't plan days in advance, but that's the way I am.

I didn't get all the way down through my list, but I finally just said "screw it" for Thursday. I needed to do some chores and work out before taking my wife out for dinner, so I decided to let it rest overnight and shoot for Friday.

It all worked out in the end. Dam had been in the field for two days but finally texted me tonight and said he was up for Friday if there was still a spot open. He even suggested another guy who has been on my boat multiple times but has just not come to mind for some reason. Now I have a crew after all, and both are likely to put fish on the boat even if I don't. And if my fish ties up too deep for my old ass, either one can help me retrieve it.

When I talked to one guy who had a prior engagement and told him I couldn't find a crew, he said he couldn't believe that. Believe it. I've spent a lot of the last two days wondering where I'd get some anchor pullers who I knew not to be pot heads and/or axe murderers. It finally worked out, but it took a lot of time.

So what is the point of all of this? I just wanted to introduce you to the POV of the boat owner. I'm certainly not implying that everyone should want to go on my boat. I know many people wouldn't be caught dead on it, and the feeling is often reciprocal. But being the boat owner and trying to be considerate of others isn't always as easy as it might seem.

Last Friday I tried putting a trip together to some (kinda) private #'s for freediving, but could only muster up line fisherman. Ran 22 miles and marked fish top to bottom in 200ft+....NO BITES. Came in to 17 miles (155ft) and marked fish top to bottom .37 miles from the wreck! Worked it hard for an hour and finally lost a fish. As the angler was reeling it in, 3 Cobias on the surface follow the bait to the boat. I hooked the biggest one (40lb) but had way to small a set up and it snapped on hook set. I lost it. My mind that is. I asked the crew to "drop me off after I mark the wreck with my float, I just want to snorkel around and see what is going on." AJ vortex....THOUSANDS....literally. I had an extra set of mask, snorkel, fins and led each guy to his first freedive speared fish! Best part is.....they never dove....literally shot these at the surface. I saw a few WAY bigger milling around at 40ft. Next time. I have FII Level One Courses May 19,20 June 2,3 July 14,15, August 11,12.....and they are booking FAST! Yes, you will see these guys in one of the classes, they saw the bigger ones to.... and freedive spearo's were born! Happy hunting!

I was wondering if anyone here was looking to save some money by having a room mate. Thought I'd ask on spearboard to have a dive buddy all the time haha!
I am looking to live within 30 minutes near downtown or 90010, so the OC would be too far for me.
A little about me: Quiet, don't have people come over often, respectful, could use more dives. I enjoy diving for abalone, wsb, and bugs. I am looking to live for about a year, and would like to keep my cost below $800 a month ideally.

Thanks guys

Unbelievable North Korea horrors coming to light
Arguably, the most poignant interview ever broadcast on CBC Radio’s The Curent, was the story this week, of Shin Dong-hyuk — possibly the only person ever to escape from a North Korean slave-labour prison camp.
All stories about prisons are harsh, but prisons, or political labour camps run by totalitarian regimes can be beyond rational comprehension. And while the Soviet gulag with its millions confined, and China’s with even more millions in custody, are inhumane and brutal, they pale to horrors of North Korea’s slave camps. Especially in the year 2012.
As the only person ever to escape from a NK camp, Shin Dong-hyuk’s story is important as it is unique in giving the world a peek inside that regime, and how the ruling Kim family maintains absolute control through fear and cruelty.
Journalist Blaine Harden discovered Shin, and tells his story in a book — Escape from Camp 14. Harden, a translator and Shin were interviewed by Anna Maria Tremonti on the CBC, and provided a wealth of appalling reality that defies imagination.
Estimates are that roughly 200,000 are in NK slave-labour camps — three generations of inmates. Shine was born in Camp 14. The only food inmates ate was a mush of corn, cabbage and salt — supplemented by mice if they could catch them. And insects.
The electrified razor wire around the camp would kill any who touched it. Anyone caught talking about escaping was shot. Shin was conceived when guards allowed brief intimacy between a male and female inmate for obedient behaviour.

At age 14, he heard his mother and brother talking about escape, and was so fearful and indoctrinated that he asked a guard what he should do. The guard turned him in, and he was roasted over a charcoal fire to extract more information. Then he witnessed his mother and brother hanged.
Rather than feel guilt at their death, he was angry that their loose talk made life tougher for him. Normal, human instincts were channeled into self-preservation.
Shin and another inmate decided to escape, but the other guy was electrocuted trying to get past the fence. Shin crawled over his friend’s dead body, which grounded the current. He fled north, stole an army uniform, got into China and made his way to Shanghai, where he reached the South Korean embassy and was taken to Seoul.
Among his recollections is a schoolgirl in Camp 14 being beaten to death by a teacher because she had a few kernels of corn in her pocket.
When Shin accidentally dropped a sewing machine, half his middle finger was chopped off as punishment. Guards had inmates beat other inmates who broke rules.
Responding to Tremonti’s question how such inhumane treatment could go on when even Russia and China were easing restrictions, author Harden explained that three generations of Kims rule the world’s most tyrannical, oppressive state.
Kim Il-sung instigated the slave camps, followed by Kim Jong-il and now Kim Jong-un who maintain them. North Koreans know of these prisons and fear them to the point of absolute submissiveness and obedience.
Once convicted to a camp, relatives and children are confined to them.
Stalin used fear and intimidation as tools for control, North Korea even more so.
“Class enemies” destined for these horror camps include those who dare practice Christianity, or who don’t keep photographs of Kim dusted and prominent in their homes.
If caught, listening to a foreign radio broadcasts can be fatal. As Shin’s youthful experience indicated those with deviant thoughts, can be executed. Until he escaped at age 29, he had never tasted chicken or pork — only corn mush.
China is North Korea’s protector — more fearful of having affluent, dynamic South Korea as a neighbour without impoverished NK as a buffer, than it is concerned about such niggling nuisances as basic human rights.
In negotiations with North Korea, neither the U.S. nor Japan, and certainly not China, ever raise the question of human rights. What’s the use? Perhaps our politicians should read Escape from Camp 14.

Hi Folks,

Most New York area divers are probably aware that over the last year there has been quite a bit of confusion, and the usual internet chatter, regarding New York State spearfishing laws. Scrutiny of existing law came as the result of new legislation that was introduced pertaining to Striped Bass spearfishing only, and in the process of examining existing law it was discovered that current regulations are practically impossible to interpret. While it seems clear that spearfishing for gamefish in NY waters is perfectly legal, there is a gray area surrounding the use of spearguns, so much so that the NYSDEC has not been willing to issue a formal statement as to the legality of their use. While there are currently no enforcement efforts being made, there have also been no apparent efforts to clarify the regulations.

Considering the 60 plus year history of spearfishing with spearguns in NY State and elsewhere, and the fact that spearfishing is considered to be the most environmentally friendly method of harvesting fish, with virtually no by-catch or unwanted mortality, we decided that it was time to make an effort to clarify the regulations and protect spearfisher's rights, once and for all.

We approached New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele and explained the situation, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that he was already aware of our predicament, and more important, he was eager to help. He asked us point blank what would make us happy, a very simple question to answer. All we wanted was a new law that made it quite clear that spearguns were legal to recreationally harvest all species of marine gamefish in New York. All other regulations pertaining to size and season would remain exactly the same as those pertaining to our brothers and sisters using a rod and reel. Working with Assemblyman Thiele's Executive Assistant Laura Stephenson, we crafted a new Bill that would do just that, and we are pleased to announce that Assemblyman Thiele recently introduced Bill A10109 in the New York State Assembly.

This is great news for the entire dive community, from us divers to the businesses that survive by providing us support, from dives shops and dive charter boats to equipment manufacturers. But it does not mean that our work is done, not by a long shot. Having a Bill introduced in the Assembly is just the beginning of the process, and we need your help to push this down the road. At this time we need the dive community to rally 'round and help us find a sponsor in the New York State Senate, and to make your voice heard by all of your elected officials. At some point in the future this Bill will come up for a vote, and our efforts will be critical in determining its success.

You can use these links to find the contact information for your elected officials. Please get in touch with them as soon as possible and let them know that protecting a diver's right to use a speargun is important to you. Original mailed letters are the most effective way to do so, but if your schedule will not allow you to do this then emails and phone calls are effective too. If all else fails you could simply forward this email to your State Representatives in the Assembly and the Senate, I'm sure that they will get the idea.
