Re: New video

So, I think that snapper I shot was actually a cubera. It sure has hell didn't smell or taste anything like a mangrove snapper when we ate it last night. Damn good.

Re: New video

It was quite good, Matt. A lot more like a black sea bass. I have yet to try scamp, though.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Yeah, I was amazed at the size, and in less than 60 feet of water. Thought he was a grouper at first. Luckily I nailed him good.

Thought it was a gag at first - almost 23 inches!

Re: New video

If he had been a scamp (which he MIGHT have been - hard sometimes for me to tell underwater) he was legal. Gag? Definitely not legal.

Re: New video

All fish shot were legal. The one at the end is a Graysby (Strawberry) grouper. No size requirements.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

We stayed in 65 feet and had same results as you did in that depth. Wish I would have pushed farther, but had 1 inexperienced spearo and two hook-and-liners. Funny, our uptop conditions were almost...

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out both Thursday (nicer day) and Friday (by afternoon getting snotty). Both pretty good (shootable) viz in 32-65 feet.

Not a lot of fish (1 gag, 14 hogs, 20 mangos, 3 porgy, 1 lion over the...

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

We are really hoping sometime soon to be able to take Tyson's oldest out on the Pelican for his first spearfishing trip. He just got certified this year. I bet he will turn into an amazing underwater...

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Glad we made the decision to go out, Tyson. I probably should have come up immediately on that 45 foot dive due to the 5'-hazy 10' viz, but the mangos were more than eager to jump on my stringer.

Re: Out of St Pete 8/7/2020

Great job, Dave. I still can't believe I got my first Permit free-shafting. Talk about luck, given how hard they fight!

Oh WOW I can't even begin to imagine how awesome those trout tasted. Been way too long since I've had fresh rainbow trout from TN.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Justin is the real deal. His sauces and rubs are amazing, and he is about as nice of a guy as you can imagine, and a Marine veteran. He's always welcome on my boat and is becoming a good spearo. ...

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Nice, Dave. Those stray ARS at this time of year and in those depths are always a nice surprise.

Re: 6-11-2020 ARS Opener

I'm normally a huge proponent of free-shafting but in certain circumstances and when going after certain species, a line shift is a better bet.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

LOL - sorry, Matt. Hell, after the day YOU had on Thursday, you should be happy with just salt and pepper.

Guys, Matt had a 3-fer. His first Gag, first flounder, and first ARS - and yeah, he got...
