I don't know about that but it was bloody relaxing.. if you want to get students involved relaxed and seeing results fast I could certainly see why you'd do it but I never use it spearing and don't do much other then focus on relaxing and taking a few long deep breaths if I think about breathing at all. Works fine for me doing sub 1.5 min/20m spear diving.
Would love to know what those med spearos shooting fish at 60m are doing..

those flushing breaths you are referring to are called purges and for deeper dives past 50m you can few add packs and the end of breathe up .
