Spearing Lionfish in the Keys?

So are there any special regs that allow spearing for Lionfish within three miles of land in the keys?

Yes you can shoot lion fish in state waters, why wouldn't you be able to?

lol well you can't spearfish at all in the pennekamp park and that is pretty specifc and this is a very broad question.

But yeah you need a permit to take lionfish out of protect areas, and I guess in pennekamp you can only catch them in a net, pretty stupid.

So much bad info out there. You can spear lion fish in pennekamp park but it requires a permit available at park offices. Same does not go for spearing inside state waters between pennekamp and mile marker 76.

You're down there, so you should know..I was just stating there were some rules about taking lion fish in the park, I didn't remember exactly what they were. I seem to remember that you can't even take a spear gun into the park, that they have to be taken by pole spear...is that correct?

can you clarify that? Are you saying you cant take them , or don't need a permit, or what?

you have to take them out in hand to hand combat when inside the 3 mile line.

Re: Spearing Lionfish in the Keys?

There are basically three zones in regards to spearfishing in the keys (including lionfish)...no spearing w/in 6 miles of shore north of Rodriguez Key, no spearing w/in three miles from Rodriguez Key to the South end of long key bridge, no spearing w/in 300 feet of shore south of the long key bridge. There are lots of other SPAs, ROAs, and other areas where spearing isn't allowed but those three guidelines covers 90 percent of our area. PM me if you want a link to the actual regs for Monroe county.

That's not what I was told by the guy working the front gate...

Pretty much no spears, guns or usage allowed in the park.

Re: Spearing Lionfish in the Keys?

We participate in all of the local lionfish derby and I'm a very active member of REEF and the dive community. The Park doesn't give out permits to spear lionfish, neither does the FK Marine Sanctuary unless it is a sanctioned event, like a lionfish derby. And then the ONLY things you can take are lionfish. The rules for Lionfish are the same as they are for spearing and collecting up and down the Keys. I guess the belief is that if they allowed spearing of lionfish everywhere too many asshats would spear everything that moved and enforcement would become even tougher than it is.

Re: Spearing Lionfish in the Keys?

It was too rough for my boat and from what I could tell the vis was bad so I never hit the water in the keys. I did go out of Pennekamp one day but once past the mangrove it was rough.

Only managed three dives out of Ft Lauderdale but never saw the first lionfish.
