Odd Inshore Catch
I'm back in NJ for the week. Orbayburak and I got out on the panga north of cape may and hit some offshore buoys and lumps within 15 miles. Hit the bridges in the morning and got one real big sheepshead. Then ran out and buoy hopped. I choked on a shot at a 40+lb cobia. Wanted to let him turn for a broadside shot but he went right past me and left. We found a ton of lesser amberjacks around the buoys. We only took one, but could have gotten several more. There were no trigger fish on the buoys but we got a few off the wrecks. Burak shot a monster barracuda off one of the buoys. Hit one buoy a bit farther out and it was covered with chicken mahi mahi. Picked up two, but didn't want to clean too many small fish. Got back to the dock by 2pm. Water was green but very clean (15-30ft vis offshore). All around great day out on the water. Great to see some southern fish up in our waters.

Re: Odd Inshore Catch
Did you eat the cuda? I got one a few years ago off OC but after reading up on cig I decided not to and felt pretty bad for killing a fish I couldn’t eat. I pass on em now.

Dloat, same here. Read about cig and ended up not eating. Been using it as bait, a lot of bait. After this dive me and Will dove in outer banks and we saw even bigger ones but we passed on them. Not worth the risk.

Gotcha, I had my cleaned and started looking at recipes but the more I read the more I got unsure and gave it to the crabs but kept the skull. Nice fish to get off the bucket list in NJ though!

Re: Odd Inshore Catch
I wouldn't trust any of the animal "tests". It seems if say 4 different people eat a meal from the same fish you could see different reactions ranging from severe to nothing. It appears to be very dependent on concentration in the piece eaten and so on. I wouldn't put any trust at all in backyard testing. Your chances that a cuda shot up here came from somewhere where cig is prevalent is low but why bother really.
Everyone in Barbados eats barracudas like crazy and most people there have never even considered cig because it's such a rarity on the island. I've eaten cuda there often and I think it's good and far from the gross tasting fish it's sometimes made out to be. It's not something so good it's worth risking anywhere really though. I took a somewhat deep dive into reading about cig yrs ago after shooting a big barracuda while on a surf trip and freaking out about it while we nibbled on tiny pieces of the fish. So before a Bahamas trip I did a lot of reading and what's pretty clear is it's a roll of the dice in a lot of respects when you're in a cig area. They're whole lists of best practices when dealing with fish in areas that have cig like avoid the high risk fish, make sure your labeling of fillets is on point, small portions, eat from different fish during same meal on and on. Best thing is really to find out just how prevalent it is in the particular area and avoid eating fish from there. If you're going for it anyway then just adhere to all the best practices super strictly. I would go so far as to say it's worth factoring in when your planning where to go on a reef spearing trip. It can be a full on horror story for some people and in high risk zones even unexpected fish can and do get people. There's so many great places to go why bother with a super high risk area in my opinion. Not that I'm able to get to the insane risk zones anyway. haha All that said I'm paranoid about certain things like that. hahaha
