? Loud "THWACK" when releasing my polespear?!?"

Hi Everyone.

I am in Thousand Oaks and my buddy just got me into the sport.

I was using the cheap-o yellow fiberglass polespear from SportsChalet with no problems until it gave me glass splinters and I upgraded to the JBL aluminum spear.

When I let that sucker fly underwater, there is quite a loud audible "Crack!" That can't be good. It seems to scare the fish away before the tip can get to them. I tried it without the tip in case it was the prongs flexing, but no, same really loud sound. I can't see or feel any moving parts loose inside the spear to rattle around.

Is this indicative of polespears or just cheap ones, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
-Mxgrogg-

I am not even a bit sure about this but do you rotate the spear as you load it? May be the sound of the band snaping back into place...

Goods call. It could be the band hitting the spear as it comes back.

The jbl gold one piece aluminium polespear is hollow. With the way the band goes into the back it can sometimes let water in. The thwack you are hearing could be some water sloshing around inside at speed. Band strike isn't as big of an issue on those due to the taper of the pole.

It could also just be the hollow nature of the pole allowing vibrations to resonate since the wall on that one is a bit thinner. My money is on water and air mixed in the chamber though.

Would it make the same sound if it was totally filled with water?

Theoretically no, but theres a small chance that all the air would escape. Similarly, you wouldn't want it full of water, it would be heavier and therefore have a slower acceleration and velocity. More mass tho! but you're not spearing the kraken.
