One def advantage for Scuba Shooters (Obviously free divers want their guns to float) is that in the heat of battle you shoot all your spears and forget that your gun is now positive and forget to put your arm through the bands. The gun will take off for the surface and end your dive and possibly cost you a gun. Might even get worse if a BUF happens to show up and you're gunless.

With a weighted butt, if you forget the guns empty, and drop the gun, it sits right there on the bottom next to you. Also, with kill spikes, multiple shafts, etc the rear added weight will improve the balance of the gun.Dan
When we were building our version of the Sea Hornet as well as the Commercial Freeshaft guns, we were really pushing for folks to "get off the leash" and start freeshaftng. Sea Hornet/Biller guns floated with no shaft in them. Like Dan said, if you get all your shafts out of the gun, and your gun is not weighted, your gun is going to the surface if you let go of it. Many shooters did not weight their gun so an arm through the bands is an easy solution if you remember to do it. I did not weight my gun so I shouldered my gun between shots. The Sea Hornets and Billers did not have muzzle kill spikes on them so placing your arm through the bands was not a problem.

When Spearboard came along around 2004........myself, Dan, and many others started posting about freeshafting and shooters took notice. Once they saw how easy and effective it could be, many decided to give freeshafting a try. However, not many shooters knew that Dan had weighted his gun so it did not float with no shafts in it. As a result, many of the new freeshafters guns ended up on the surface with some lost forever.

Therefore, if your gun floats and you do not want to weight it, shouldering between shots is a good solution. If your gun is weighted, I agree with Dan, no need to shoulder. Shouldering a weighted gun, a gun with a spare shaft in the holder, or a gun with a muzzle spike, can be problematic and sometimes painful.

Fast forward to now: The Ocean Rhino speargun has a muzzle kill spike option because Dan & Ricky showed me how effective it was. I had never seen this tool until they showed me. The light on the kill spike option cemented the deal and I knew that it had to be included in the Ocean Rhino design. Additionally, the Ocean Rhino sinks slightly with no shafts in the gun. Therefore, I no longer instruct shooters to shoulder the Ocean Rhino like I did the unweighted Sea Hornets and Billers.

Basically, you need to adapt your shooting style to match your equipment and vice versa. There are no set rules. You really just need to do what is most comfortable for you and do whatever produces positive and consistent results. Dan and Ricky are at the absolute top of their game when it comes to cutting edge spearfishing equipment and advanced harvesting technique. Whenever we get together for dinner and Dan starts talking technical.......I listen and learn!

Yeah, Moose, how can you NOT come?!? Geeeez. Put it on your calendar already. No excuses. First beer is on me.

OK, I started the agenda for next year. Saturday at 3 pm -- "Spear Tips & Moose Tails" by Dan MacMahon and KMoose.

You need to start editing some of that raw footage you guys have. It's fantastic. This session will be standing room only. Maybe I will provide popcorn and a two-hour time slot.

Very well said, Kevin. That's why you're a great teacher.

If you can make this happen Sheri, it would definitely be one of the "absolutely must see" events at the 2014 Blue Wild.

Kevin...love your response...nice job explaining the details! Your new gun line is def unique and has several features unmatched in any other gun. We've speared some pretty sweet fish with them! Would be great to have you at the next BW!

Sheri.....whatever I can do to assist with the 2014 BW and yourself...just let me know!

Would be glad to show some vids and explain/discuss with the audience.....planning on doing some additional filming this year..might be off the hook!

I have some pretty special memories from those 4 days of this years Blue Wild event... (some were amazing), and the 2014 Blue Wild should be even better!

Dan

Dan would any of those be of you hanging out with me? LOL

Dude, thanks for sharing that video with us. Its amazing what you see at that depth and how little time you have to enjoy it. Guys Dan missed out of shooting a huge grouper because he was worried about his buddy's air time. What a guy.

Another vote for Dan & Kenny speaking at the BlueWild...maybe freeshafting discussion & also a separate...or piggybacked...story telling section.

I'm sure I saw Kevin giving a discussion on freeshafting years ago...I thought it was at the BW, when at the IGFA. I remember it being equally as good as Dan's...it was nice seeing two slightly different presentations. It would be great to have both during the same show.

Yes, you are remembering correctly. Kevin gives a fantastic seminar on freeshafting, and he spoke at some of the past Expos. He knows he has a standing invitation to every Expo.

I bet he comes over to watch the Dan/KMoose combo. No one will want to miss that one! I'll put them in the big room with a giant screen, so they can show their amazing video.

Dan alone packs the house already. Take a look at this picture. Dan's stories always captivate the crowd.

More pics...great exhibitors, amazing artists. We had some pretty cool people there -- from Dr. Eugenie Clark and Stan Waterman and Art Pinder to the 4th astronaut in space, Scott Carpenter, to the Gator Boys and Manny Puig. It was great to see the smiling faces. To those that came, I hope you had a good time.
