Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out

I'm using the small stainless beads from shower curtain hooks as inserts. One set (~ $1) is good for 30 bands…

Just curious.... Are you using notched shafts or sharkfin shafts? For shark fin shafts I would use the Blue Spectra stuff that Neptonics sells. It is a thicker diameter and ties a nice knot that won't pull through. For notched shafts I would use inserts and the same 1.9 stuff you are using now. Plastic inserts or metal inserts both work well with the smaller diameter bridal needed for notched shafts.

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out

I've often wondered if the small plastic craft beads sold at craft stores and department stores would work. Can buy those by the pound, cheap. Think the hardest part would be finding the proper size..doesn't take much if the knots are tied well.

x2 what GR said. Inserts are the best for small I.D. rubber or the 2.8mm Neptonics dyneema. Just use dish soap to get it in.

Interesting...

What's the hole diameter? Does a 1.9 mm dyneema pass through it?

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out

It's time consuming but what I've been using when I don't just use the Rob Allen type wishbones is epoxy. I tie double overhand knots on each end of the wishbone like everyone else, but then I dip the knots in 5 minute epoxy and let it harden into "beads". Easy to install and keeps the water out of the bands.

Well....I've been warned so this might get me banned from SB but here you go. We always use those same type of overhand knot loops and don't have any issues. I credit it mostly to the gray dacron we use and sell for the constrictor knots. That stuff doesn't slip, ties really tight and we only use a single constrictor. It bites good and just doesn't loosen or slip.

Oh and yes I use this same type of gray dacron from ________ and it works great with a single constrictor knot as well.

Yep, no worries. Left is RA dyneema (1.8?), bottom shower curtain, above that salvimar brass then Meandros plastic and salvimar with doubled up RA dyneema.
Other pic shows the profile of shower curtain bead on a 14mm on the rest tab. Wishbone is only rusty due to poorly stored dyneema, has nothing to do with the inserts.

…and yes, you can use plastic beads and anything in between. I used brass square cord ends once. Mileage may vary though

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out

I've had a couple bands pop lately too. I think it's from using the thinner constrictor knot line that I can't pull as hard as I can with two needle nose pliers without the line breaking. I'm going back to thicker constrictor knot line. I'm only using the 1.8 wishbone Dyneema with a double overhand knot then coating with Parts Dip and letting dry.

There's an old Hawaii saying: "In no fit, use spit" It applies to many situations.
