Wasssup with Sea Urchins?

For anyone not in the extreme South Jersey area, we have been cursed by a Sea Witch who has been blowing around the water in bad directions causing awfully murky water for over a year now. Being said, spearfishing is a bust here these days but one thing harvestable is black sea urchins. I've never eaten one.

Does anyone have experience with the black sea urchins in New Jersey? Do they die in the winter? Are there restrictions? can we eat them? are they good? I've had fancy pretentious eaters or "foodies" ask me if I could get them. I told them no, but I'm interested in getting some for my mother. Is that weird?

Interesting one..... I know they harvest them in Maine for the sushi trade. I would say figure out if it's the same species. I bet it is. Then figure out around when they spawn or if they spawn throughout the year so you can target them at their best. Keep us updated this is an interesting one. I don't see nearly as many as I used to up here.

Cancel that just looked....diferent species

Here's ours : Arbacia punctulata

Doesn't seem to be much on eating them

Thanks. I can't seem to find any info on them myself. I think I'll just let the Tog eat them for now. I saw some clusters of them on the end of my jetty a few weeks ago and I don't remember seeing them for a long time. Back in the day they really covered the rocks as well as starfish.

Yeah, as soon as I saw the post I thought to myself I don't really see many anymore. When I was younger they were all over in some places.

Try it, weirdo. and report back. You never know. There's many stories I know of people finally coming around to eating a specimen they never thought edible. I ate a similar species off the docks in CA fresh. The eggs were very tasty. How about that first person to suck on a cow tit??

This is a true story. I believe in an afterlife where we can do anything we want, like haunt places or hang out with dinosaurs etc, my main thing is to go to the time when the first human discovered a watermelon. How cool is that??
