Re: Wahoo on the GATKU Pole off SoCal

Nice! Increasing the difficulty makes it more enjoyable for some people.
I get the same BS from my buddies who hunt with compound bows and rifles when I show up with a wooden longbow I made in the garage.
F@#k 'em, it s all about the hunt

This video might erase any doubts you have:

Fish is nice and there's a lot of difficulty on taking it on a polespear, but I see so many wrong things on that video. First of all, that loaded speargun tanglin' around in the floatline. Then, did you realize how long it took to take off the weight belt? I don't want to think what would've happened if he REALLY had to take it off at some point.

Keep telling yourself that man, I hope you really believe it. I understand the perspective of challenging yourself by using inferior gear but at the end of the day, I want to land the fish. Period. I get reef hunting with a polespear but in blue water it just doesn't make any sense to me.

I just watched the video again and that second pass was an unbelievable opportunity to land a Wahoo in California waters. Any typical bluewater gun setup would have strung that fish up. And instead OP couldn't even get a shot off. Diver Dirks would have landed that fish with his 90cm.

Brutal.

I will and I do. If my freezer wasnt loaded to the brim Id consider the .270 or the bluewater gun.
Its bug season anyways, mano a mano.

How short your diving career is, is so glaringly obvious in this post lol

I think it's a matter of what you are OK with. If you are OK with challenging yourself knowing that you might miss a few fish, then more power to you. I doubt he was specifically targeting wahoo and was probably looking to get a few yellows or dorado, which are highly pole spearable (just a guess). The wahoo was a blessing in and of itself.

Sweet video and glad you had a rad encounter.

Interesting observation coming from a guy who feels the need to shoot 19 yellowtail in 3 days with an Oceanborn...

But I have no reservations in admitting my relative inexperience. I didnt' start diving until I was 37. Not a bad evolution in 3 years time...

You're calling a polespear inferior, It isn't. It just requires much more skill.
If you think you can dive then you should be able to take any fish you normally hunt with a polespear.
Yeah I needed the oceanborn that trip, I called up about 6 people before I left the dock and told em that I would bring them a few dozen pounds of filet each when I got back. That was a freezer trip for all my buddies and hey I loooove to kill things.
I could have easily gotten enough for myself with a polespear though

polespears are cool and the video of the wahoo is nice. if i was gatku, i'm not so sure i would put out a video showing a missed shot saying "brought to you..." by my product. but that's just me.

Not sure why everyone is acting like he was even targetting wahoo with a pole spear. Kinda like if you were hunting dorado with a small reel gun a striped marlin blew past.

That's what spearboard is all about these days, though. Young hotshots and old newbs that act like them and just a ton of ego.

The only reason I still filter in here every so often is because this is the site that has the most people in the Japan region. Like 20 or so. Unfortunately, most of them are military in Okinawa so they're far from where I'm at.

I'm stoked for Gattoni though. Not every day you get a chance to see something like that in those waters, whether or not you hit/land it you've already been blessed.
