The Spanish National Team has climbed again to the top of the podium in the XXXI World Underwater Fishing Championship that has been held in Sagres, Portugal, achieving with this, the twelfth gold medal in the classification by nations of this specialty.

Twenty days of zone preparation and two of competition have been necessary for the Spanish team to win the world championship in an environment in which the host team (Portugal) started as a favorite, and in which they participated. total of 68 athletes from 23 countries.

The first day of competition was on Saturday, in the "north" zone, an area where a good number of catches were expected since in previous days many fish had been seen, and in which a great state of the sea would allow a good part of competitors obtained margin of advantage for the second day. Xavi Blanco (Spain) got the first position in this first round, followed very closely by André and Pedro Dominges (Portugal), the reigning world champion Giorgios Vasiliou (Cyprus), Jody Lot (Portugal), Sergio de Julián and Santiago López Cid (Spain), all of them with a margin of scores with which it was difficult to foresee the final results.

The second day took place on Sunday in the "southern" zone and it was expected a lower performance in terms of number of captures, which was confirmed at the end of the five hours of testing as, for the most part, the athletes presented quite fewer pieces than in the previous day.
In a weighing in which until the last moment it was impossible to guess the results, Jody Lot (Portugal) broke with the percentages rising with the victory of this second sleeve and obtaining the final individual victory, they followed him on the podium, in second position André Domingues (Portugal), and third Xavier Blanco (Spain). Sergio de Julián obtained the fourth position, and Santiago López Cid the sixth.

After the calculation of percentages for the classification by nations, the Spanish Selection obtained the gold, being the silver for Portugal and the bronze for Chile.

Along with Xavier Blanco, Sergio de Julián and Santiago López Cid, they have moved to Sagres as part of the Spanish National Team and as an invaluable help in the preparation of zones and the development of the competition: Andrés Pita, Ángel Cruz, César Bustelo, Jacobo García, José Luis Fernández and Mario Cañizo, with Andrés Sureda as captain and Amanç Bolos as coach.
