X2

They are designed to be carried with the hammer back, safety on. Scores of people carry them on duty and for self defense. In the time of need you won't have time to draw and cock.

One of my favorite gun quotes of all time came from a Texas Ranger carrying a 1911 on his hip, hammer back. A citizen pointed to it and said: "isn't that dangerous?" The Ranger replied, "I wouldn't carry the son-of-a-bitch if it wasn't dangerous..."

BTW, I never dive with the safety on my speargun either.

Re: AHH!! How do I know how big a Halibut is when it's burried!!!!!

This "use the safety" VS "not"...is a stupid, no one wins argument. (being there done that)

Not to mention...the macho attitude "if you use a safety you don't know what you are doing" on this forum is over rated.

Can we stick to determine the size of the freacking Halibut?

You're missing the point (pun intended), it's not about attitude, it's about keeping fellow spearos safer. I'm glad there are many who pay attention to experience. It's easier than learning the hard way, which I wouldn't wish on anyone.

PM sent on the hali question. re-railed

I think I get the point ..In this case, I read the good valuable info, but I also read the my way is "the way". I no longer subscribe to the last.

Some people feel using the "safety" is not safe (I guess), some others think the "safety mech " is nice to have. I think most people know that in this sport, we can not rely on anything, it is consider a high risk acitvity after all.

Reliability of the safety mech is an entire different threat.

The "if you need a safety on your gun = you might not be a responsible spearo" Is an opinion, not a fact. The rest, I think is attitude.

People who treat a loaded weapon with the safety on, as if the weapon was not loaded are dumb, not the same as ignorant.

But, that is not what this threat was intended for, so. I am done with the safety mech. subject.

Re: AHH!! How do I know how big a Halibut is when it's burried!!!!!

If the safety on a gun as meaningless, they wouldn't have put it there!

A 1911 has three safeties on it. Its is one of the safeist handguns available. CHP's S&W .40 cals are always cocked. Your trigger is never a reliable safety. Anybody know the 4 rules about firearms? they apply to spearguns too..

1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded

2. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until ready to fire

3. Know your target, and what lies beyond

4. Do not point your weapon you arent willing to destroy

and let common sense prevail...if you have any

Not quite true. It may be there to protect the manufacturer from liability.

Notice that the guns that have safeties are the mass produced guns. Guns like Wong, Merlo, Alexander, Gil, Sea Sniper, and other more limited production wood guns who's names escape me now don't have safeties. If they are necessary or even advisable, why do all these top gun makers omit them? I'm guessing that its because the typical customer for these high-end guns doesn't want them.

You should have asked if you should use your safty or not, by the end of the thread you might know how to tell how big a halibut is hidden in the sand.

It takes but a few seconds to unload and then reload a gun.
Mods please change the thread title to be something about "Using Safeties"

Re: AHH!! How do I know how big a Halibut is when it's burried!!!!!

Well all these replies are related. One of the ways to find out how big a flaty is (probably last option) is to spook it and shoot it on the fly. the only problem is his safety prevented him from being quick enough to put the shaft through the fish. So I told him to get that damn safety off, cause if he is going to be hunting for very long, this will not be the last incident he will have. Do you really think if you come up on a personal best calico bass 10 plus pounds that its just going to sit there while you monkey around with your safety.

You are hunting out there, you are not shooting targets. You need to be alert to all your surroundings and you need to be as quick, efficient, and deadly as you can be when your opportunity arrives.

but like I said, if you wanna keep using your safety and you feel that it makes you safer, than use it.
