Anyone do any winter diving in utah/wyoming?

I have been contemplating trying it out...I have a good 7 mil cressi, I dove when the water was 43 degrees this may and was fine for over an hour, but I would assume the water is in the mid to high 30's. Is there anywhere that stays open? does anyone dive in the cold waters this time of year? Any suggestions where to find fish?

Hey, we usually get in the water when temp hits 43 in our 5mils. Never dove in winter. If you do you'll have to let me know how that works out. Also I don't know of any lakes that stay open.

I've tried diving when it's colder. And have a friend who has been in when there was still ice on the lake but I never see any fish. The only success I know of in the real cold water is for trout.

Well I'm pretty late to the party, but I frequently dive Deer Creek in November. I use a 7mm two piece (so from thighs to neck I'm under 14mm) and it works alright. Also a 7mm hood, otherwise you get brain freeze as soon as you get in the water.

We had a good early cold snap a few years ago and the edge of the lake began to ice up. I had to crunch my way through thin ice out about 4 feet to get to the water. Those first few seconds under water (when all the air is working its way out and water is trickling down your spine) are pretty intense and will leave you gasping for breath, but after things settle in I'm usually good for up to about 3 hours. Definitely want to have an emergency exit plan and know the signs of early hypothermia.

Why would anyone do this to themselves you may ask?

I have my reasons...

Walleye and Trout (and the carp are always in the way). Bass are around, but not in large numbers.

Laying an 8lb walleye out on the tailgate does wonders for morale.
