Re: wetsuit related break out

might be more then folliculitus, you might have crotch barnacles. These can be often gotten from too many conch expeditions. Might want to get that checked out

I use a baby lotion and water mixture, I have not had a skin irritation since.

In the past, I tried hair conditioner and got the same skin irritation that you described.

Re: wetsuit related break out

My dive buddy and I have dealt with this and switched to Mako lube to see if we are just sensitive to something in all the conditioners we've tried.

Although I still had a small 'outbreak,' it's not nearly as bad. The Mako lube is more slippery compared to the various conditioners I've used, and I like that it doesn't smell, so I'm happy. I'm wondering if the smaller outbreak was due to the fact that the suit was better lubricated rather than a sensitivity to the conditioners.

Next I'll try disinfecting my suit with hibiclens. If that doesn't work, a light solution of bleach.

Worked for me. Just need to be vigilant about it.

I was breaking out like crazy on my chest and back. Started using a bleach solution spray for about 10 minutes, rinse, then spray with dettol solution and hang in sun to dry. It's been working for me.

Dettol is waaaay cheaper than hibiclens.

Re: wetsuit related break out

It's friction with the rubber which causes the bumps, I spoke to a good dermatologist about it years ago when it was happening to me all the time.

That is why with our suits foliculitis is most common on armpits. Just use plenty of lube and make sure 100% of the interior of the suit is soapy before you put it on, and it also helps to avoid long hikes in an open cell suit--dress by the water. Even if your is perfectly sterile, the friction of the rubber irritates hair folicles and causes foliculitis. You can get infections from dirty suits but if you are rinsing it out between dives and drying it inside out but still getting foliculitis then try more lube.

^ Great advice, didn't think of that aspect.

Also, doesn't bleach break down neoprene?

Yes, bleach is not good for neoprene. I never use it on a suit until the suit is really old and almost worthless anyway. Hot water is okay on wetsuits--hot water plus enzymatic cleaner like myrazyme/sink the stink after every use, and wetsuit shampoo about every 20 hours works well for me. Regular detergent is also bad for neoprene.

Re: wetsuit related break out

I've been using some Cure Care I've been hoarding away for 4 years or so now, on my 4th gallon already. Bought them out at 6 bucks a pop for the gallon! Feels like it lasts forever, sucks they don't make it anymore. Back when I used to dive 3-4 times a week (shoutout to the good ol days @aus) I blew through a lot more than I do now. Seems like a gallon lasts me almost two years.

Anybody have a lead on any unscented stuff for a decent price?

Heard baby shampoo is pretty good.

Re: wetsuit related break out

I use fragrance free baby wash... i always feel like conditioner doesnt wash out and it keeps boat decks slippery.
