The scary thing was the sharks we didn't see, we were picking up acoustic pings from previously tagged sharks...at one point there were 5 sharks within a 100 meter radius of our boat. You could not pay me enough to get in the water where that arrow is on reefgeek's map. PERIOD. Props to all who do! You all are CRAZY!

Re: Dillons Beach / Bodega Bay

My dad and his buddies used to ab dive the Bird Rock area before I came along. I believe that is the area TRG has marked on the pic. Mom tells me they would motor across the straights and clime over the hill to the ab beds.

I was tempted to dive the rocks a little north of the the beach a couple years ago on a Thanksgiving weekend trip, but I was too chicken. We drove and dove north of Jenner instead.

I hear the Tomales straights offer some kick but halibut hunting in September. I wonder if that brings in the big whites. I don't think I'll be one to find out.

I think I may still have my card with the date and location code from when I dove there. I may have forgotten to mail it in. Or did I? Would that be illegal to keep that as a souvenir?

Re: Dillons Beach / Bodega Bay

I did see a sea lion there once, he was trying to say something...but he had been bitten in half, only 60ft away from me. I never heard a thing. A fisherman in a boat asked me straight up of I was crazy or retarded. I shrugged, and said "He already ate, he's not hungry anymore." The guy was a local DFG- he followed me to my kayak, checked my fish, my abs, and left laughing at me. Truth?? I was spooked as hell, but what can you do? It's creepy, and the water is dirty.

Amen, but y'know, 'Ol Whitey is out there. All over.
I personally feel that there's no one place that's any safer than the rest as far as white sharks are concerned. Probably nothing you can do to lessen your odds (short of diving with someone who swims slower). Camo, or black suits, bloody fish strapped to your ass or not, if it's your time, bye bye.

The one thing I would do to lessen my odds of getting bit would be not to swim in Tomales Bay.

I go north! There are lots of places up by Jenner that have plenty of fish and not so many of the tax man!

You all make diving there sound like Club Med xD , but I think I will leave my gear at home for this trip.....some day I will drag my ass up there, roll the dice, and get me some Abs.

Re: Dillons Beach / Bodega Bay

I do have a buddy who dove the mouth of Tomales with guys that regulraly dive there for halibut, they guy I was with last Friday. It was on Scuba though. I told him I wouldn't mind being a deckhand there this season, but I have mixed emotions about joining them in the water since I don't scuba. I think the combination of fear and excitement is defined as stupidity. Maybe one of these days when and if the Alzheimers sets in, otherwise I know of a good cliff to drive off. But don't tell my insurance ajent.
