Of Lobster, Sea Bass & Squid..

...Can't resist a run, taking young Billy Ballew along for some bonding time aboard "Balluga", a 25' Parker...with a window between storms for Tuesday/Wednesday and 2' swells at 12 seconds apart, I am making a first of the season shakedown run to Catalina. There is squid on the backside and along the coast at Huntington Beach. White sea bass and a few yellows are also along the backside at the usual haunts. Water temp west is 57 and on the east end, about 58 degrees with lots of plankton upwelling all around the island. May be bad vis...good for lots of baitfish but, bad for diving, thus, the justification for my trusty rod and reel... Santa Barbara island has some gamefish, but, will save that for the opening of rockfish season and a combo trip on the deep water spots that were opened up by F&W guys, after years of closure.
...Replaced one bad battery, checked for the usual corrosion issues on the red and green lights, etc. Lobster have moved up shallow, saving a lot of 80' pulling, (I hope)..Finally decided hooping was a hell of a lot easier than grabbing eels back in holes with sharp edges, while running out of breath just as the bugs come within range....With speargun and trusty rod, I shall go forth..Hopefully, our catch won't cost more than $30 a pound, based on this year's boat expenses....
