Re: The keys travel

June and early July before hurricane season. Warm water and usually calm seas. Check to see what's open and closed. Laws keep changing on something almost monthly.

Re: The keys travel

I have always gone in August or September. Over the years, we have gotten more into spearfishing and less interested in lobster. So, this year for the first time, we are going to go April 28 to May 5. This gives us opening day (May 1st) for Black Grouper and Hogfish. No lobsters of course, but I think it will be a whole less crowded than August.

Re: The keys travel

I would feel like going down outside of lobster season would be a total waste, but I just love lobstering that much. Lobster closes at the end of March I think, and the water was pretty warm last time I went at that time a few years ago.

Re: The keys travel

I have been quite a few times over the years - more times that not, I run into bad sea conditions if I go before Mid April. After that I have had great luck - I would say the month of May would be my 1st choice.

Re: The keys travel

With todays new technology, there are very few "secret spots" left. I thought I had a bunch on my little hand held GPS - seems like every time I get on some one else's boat they seem to have the same secret spots as I do....

Re: The keys travel

May can be really good for fish but so-so with weather. Some Mays are completely blown out.

June and July are the best for fish and weather with winds staying calm for weeks on end.

August is usually great weather too but the fish quantity/quality seem to start falling off as the water gets really warm.

I stopped even attempting to dive at all in September. You can get great weather and warm water but the amount of fish is usually a 1 out of 10 compared to May - July. The water is just too warm, the bottom algea starts to grow in the gulf and the Atlantic is covered in Jellyfish.

January - April both grouper and hogfish are closed. In April permit are now closed through July. Wahoo is best November to February.
