Bad Aim??

A recent snorkeling trip in the Bahamas gave me another opportunity to showcase my hunting skills and overall calm demeanor.

I was trying for a lobster and had absolutely no clue there was a moray in there. Boy did I get a surprise when I pulled the spear out of the hole.

Once speared, I pretty much had a tiger by the tail and desperately wanted to get another pole spear into him so that he couldn't pop off and really injure someone.

Cracked me up with "calm demeanor" At least you didn't stick your hand in there to try to grab the lobster.

Re: Bad Aim??

I had actually put my hand in there and tried to grab a lobster on an earlier dive.

Jfjf, While we all appreciate the entertainment and totally understand mistakes happen, other people won't get it or they won't care. My advice is to take this down before you end up the next viral target for the internet and media mob. I say this as a friend.

Re: Bad Aim??

You were close to the boat. You could've swim to the boat and control it from there by yourself.

But we won't be able to see another funny video...

You were pretty lucky for sure. Those eels are like vampires.

Re: Bad Aim??

Well, as soon as I saw, "showcase my hunting skills and calm demeanor..." I knew I had something humorous to watch 😎

Thanks for not disappointing jfjf!

I pretty much just dive off of Clearwater on the W coast of Fl, but I was diving in the keys off of islamorada a few years ago. I saw what was my first legal true black at the time and shot him. He got into the reef and I went after him where he went in. He shook the shaft and I reloaded it and was hovering over what looked like an exit point and saw a tail there. I was getting ready to shoot and something made me hold up. I checked the entry point and there was a big green moray face there. The tail, well it was his. So I think the black was in there, and from my standpoint, he was now the eel's. I was solo and in new territory for me. I certainly wanted the fish, but didn't pursue it further. A captain down there told me it was the right move. He said, "you damn near rather tangle with a tiger shark than one of those damn eels. It will bite you. It will keep biting you. And it will continue to bite you all the way back to the boat."

So fortunately last year I got a much bigger black grouper out here in the Gulf so that species is notched in.

Glad you didn't get bit jfjf!

Re: Bad Aim??

Hardest I ever laughed underwater was watching a friend get ravaged by a spotted eel at 60'. Few years ago we were off W Palm and my friend was trying to catch some ornamentals for his tank and pissed off a small spotted eel about 2' long.....he was flailing trying to get away from it as it was biting him all over. Fortunately for him, he was wearing a full 3 mill wetsuit and the teeth didn't penetrate much through it, but when he got to the boat and took off his suit, you could see bite marks all up and down his arms. Few little puncture wounds that had a drop of blood on them, but mostly just red marks where the teeth went through the wetsuit, but not enough to puncture the skin. That thing attacked him until he got a good 20-30 feet off the bottom.
