Dana point/South Laguna Conditions
Hey there fellow Spearos. I'm thinking of making the long drive down from Northern California to get into some waters where there aren't 15 ft swells rolling in every weekend. Anyone know if there's any kelp left in the Dana Point/south Laguna area after all these El Nino storms?

Re: Dana point/South Laguna Conditions
It's been a tough few weeks down this way. This weekend looks alright but not the best.
On shore kelp is at a minimum. Most of the kelp that's been growing gets destroyed by the swells. At this point either of those spots should be dive-able. Be sure you know the MLPA locations, easily found on the DFW site. |

Thanks @Deeber, all checked up on MPA's. Not much kelp is kind of what I was expecting. But thanks for the heads up. Hopefully I'll track down a spot with some more interesting bottom topography to make up for the lack of kelp.

If your already coming down I say spend the extra $75 to get on the express over to Catalina, better yet you can leave out of San Pedro and save 120mi of driving (round trip). That way you can at least know that there will be clear water and no swell.

Re: Dana point/South Laguna Conditions
@rysgates, I think you're right. At this point, Catalina is my best bet. I tried an old dive spot I used to dive as a kid in north laguna. Saw three fishing boats and 8-9 spearfishers out there in the span of 2 hours. There wasn't a fish to be seen. Pretty discouraging when considered with the conditions as of late, and the fact that I normally come out of Northern California waters with 20+ lbs of combined RCG+Ling. Either way, I'm likely hitching a ride with a friend out to Catalina next weekend. I haven't been out there since I was very fresh to diving. So we'll see what happens
