Cape may diving
I'm headed down to Cape May this weekend from Boston and wondering whether I should bring my dive stuff or not. If I do bring my dive stuff, I'm planning on diving from shore. From what I've read, it seems like viz is very iffy, especially during the summer versus spring and fall. Is it more iffy than Point Pleasant or about the same? I've dove Point Pleasant many times before and for the most part, when the weather's been decent, viz has been sufficient for hunting.

Re: Cape may diving
Vis is much more iffy down there when compared to point. Nobody can give you a good answer on what vis will look like during the upcoming weekend. Probably terrible but if it's good and you have no gear you'll be kicking yourself for not having it. Better to have and not need.

Re: Cape may diving
At high tide it must be OK. You don't wanna deal with rip currents during ebb. There were some TV news about Atlantic city rip currents, something to do about sand slide. It probably doesn't apply to cape May but still as you probably already know, high tide is better for viz and safer.

Re: Cape may diving
There's really no areas in Cape May that are good because of the proximity to the Delaware Bay. There's spots just north but unfortunately I haven't seen a single day this entire season with any vis. It's the worst year ever for diving there and I have been going there over 40 years. Being said, you just never know. A weird current might change it and hopefully it will. I'm going down today

Re: Cape may diving
Jumped in and saw some fish, nothing shot as they were literally in my face before I saw them. Nonetheless, cool dive seeing fish and coral.

Re: Cape may diving
It's so frustrating because you can hear them but barely see therm. There's so many diverse fish in that area too. Glad you got in the water at least. I went jet sking and went around the concrete sunken ship just off Cape May point. Talk about a dream dive spot but it's all murky delaware bay water there.

Cape May inlet
Does anyone know if access to the Cape May inlet is permitted from the Coast Guard base? The hike in from the North side is doable but not worth the effort for no visibility.

Re: Cape may diving
Been doing crane work there for couple weeks. Gotta get a badge to even get in and have a reason. I dont think spearing is a valid reason I havnt seen where the water is anything but dookie anyways.

If you are active or retired military you can get a pass at the Coast Guard TRACEN in cape May. You get a swipe card and a window permit to park there. Technically there is “no swimming” at the coast guard beach this year until some sort of approval goes through, but I don’t consider diving swimming. I was granted permission to access the south jetty but it was quickly rescinded after they “reviewed the base rules.” |
