Re: N.W. Visibility Updates
Optimistically (?) went seaward today, only to find a +- 1/4mi. band of maroon tinted gloom along the shore from P.C. to B.V.. Wind was at it too. The water offshore looked nice, however. This too shall pass...

Re: N.W. Visibility Updates
Bad news first, it was pea soup. Good news, the variety where you can see 4-6ft. . That's about a 600% improvement over my last 5 attempts. Like a pond on the north jetty, and I was able to perforate 4 "hatchling" size rockfish. (they're a more difficult target than, let's say, 10lb. carp) It was great to be in, and a change in the viz is on the way.
On a side note, for those considering paddling out in the next couple days, todays postings were the same or less than the days ahead and the bay and ocean were in full whitecaps by noon... |

Re: N.W. Visibility Updates
Arrived at the Kape this morning around 6, and it was the ,as of late, familiar brown murk. Now Joe had camped down there and had a pretty good day yesterday, so I was sorry to have to break the news to him. But he didn't seem too fazed, he just wanted to get something to eat. Which, In my handful of meetings with him, is showing itself to be the norm. Jacques and I wandered the shore with binocs, trying to judge what the water looked like at the rock. I have noticed that with the low angle of the morning sun, that is hard to do. Anyway, I was the pessimist, but when Joe finally made it down, after cleaning out the buffet, he said, " It kinda looked like that yesterday". With that encouragement and Michael's enthusiastic arrival, I figured some paddling practice couldn't hurt. Man, on the way out it got worse! That is, until about 2/3 of the way, and Voila! it started looking good. I really couldn't believe it. The wind was building, and kept at it, but not enough current to matter. And , sadly, Mike forgot his fins. Crap. I was going to suggest he do a "Josh", but that should probably be someone's own idea. A variable 8-10ft. viz. I got 5, Joe had a limit. Nice to be able to see at least a few feet!

Re: N.W. Visibility Updates
Newport last night was about a hazy 3'. Couldnt see the end of my spear and my light barely made it half way down the spear.

I'm going to start wobbler fishing on the big C. You want to go? I usually put three in the boat including myself. |

Cliff,
To me it would be worth the fine haha. It's such a ridiculous rule anyway.

Re: N.W. Visibility Updates
I agree, spearing a big salmon would be one hell of a ride if we could.

Re: N.W. Visibility Updates
Willamette river had 8' to 10' vis this morn. A lot of curious bass, one catfish and one big carp, like the one Mike shot. Well, probably not that big. I didn't bring my gun and just explored. Much more enjoyable than my first dive in the Willy.

Newport actually had great vis this weekend! Dove the high slack yesterday and had about 6-12' depending on the spot/depth. It cleared up on some spots, but was hazy other areas. |
